Lady Jays Basketball

Lady Jays Battle Bravettes

The varsity Lady Jays battled against the Bravettes on Saturday, January 19, at the Pierce High gymnasium. The Lady Jays fell with a score of 62-65.

Abigail Meier started off the Lady Jays as the only scorer in the first quarter, scoring two two-pointers. With their slow offensive start, the Lady Jays ended the first quarter behind the Bravettes 4-12.

In the second quarter, the Lady Jays caught up as Kenzie Moeller scored two two-pointers and a three-pointer. Zoe Brenden scored three two-pointers, and Brianna Aguilera scored one two-pointer and a free throw. The Lady Jays outscored their opponents 16-15 in the second quarter to end the half with a 20-27 score against the Bravettes.

In the third quarter, the Lady Jays fought back, scoring 19 points to the Bravettes’ 16. Moeller made one two-pointer, Brenden scored three two-pointers and two free throws, and Maggie Brahmer scored three two-pointers and three free throws. The Bravettes held on to the lead heading into the fourth quarter with a score of 39-43.

In the final quarter, the Lady Jays scored 21 points while letting the Bravettes score only 17. Kayla Simmons made two three-pointers, Moeller and Brenden made one two-pointer and two free throws, Aguilera made one free throw, and Brahmer scored three two-pointers. The Lady Jays ended the fourth quarter tied with the Bravettes, leading to overtime with a score of 60-60.

During overtime, Brenden was the Lady Jays’ only scorer as she made two free throws to end the game behind the Bravettes 62-65.

Throughout the game, Abbey Fuerhoff had three rebounds. Kayla Simmons had three rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block. Kenzie Moeller had three rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block. Marie Stone had two rebounds.  Zoe Brenden had seven rebounds and four assists. Brianna Aguilera had one rebound, two assists, and one steal. Maggie Brahmer had 11 rebounds, two assists, and one block. Abigail Meier had one rebound and two assists.

The next varsity girls’ game will be on Thursday, January 24, at Crofton.


JV Girls Fall to Bravettes

The junior varsity Lady Jays took on the Battle Creek Bravettes on Saturday, January 19, at Pierce, but ended the night with a loss 36-41.

To start off the game, Kennedy Warneke scored a two-point shot alongside Mikala Stone with a two. Snatching the three was Faith Lubischer, along with getting two free throws. Stone whipped in a three to end the first quarter 15-4 in favor of the Lady Jays.  

During the second quarter, Warneke was back at it and scored a two. Callie Arnold then contributed with a free throw. Stone came back at the Bravettes banking a two. The Lady Jays’ defense held the Bravettes to seven. Going into the locker room, Pierce was up 20-11.

Starting the second half, Alexus Sindelar fixed up her framework for a three, with Brynnlee Marks dropping in a two. The Bravettes charged forward with 19 points to overtake the Lady Jays’ lead by five points to end the quarter 25-30.

For the last quarter of the game, Warneke came out with a bang to score a three for Pierce, along with scoring two of her free throws. To continue on with the free throw trend, Gina Wragge also came out with her skills to knock in both, and Sindelar hit one of her two. Warneke finished off the game with hitting a three, but still falling short, the Lady Jays lost to the Bravettes 36-41.

Junior varsity coach Amber Henderson said, “We came out strong and handled their pressure okay.” She also went on to say they didn’t have much time to prepare for this game, and many players were out due to injuries and sickness, so she hopes that for the next game, they will come back and show more consistency in each quarter.

The next JV girls’ game is on Tuesday, February 5, on the Pierce court at 4:30 against the Wynot Blue Devils.


Freshmen Lady Jays Battle Wisner-Pilger

The freshmen Lady Jays competed against the Wisner-Pilger Gators on Monday, January 14. The Lady Jays lost in a close game, ending with a score of 30-32.

The Lady Jays started the first quarter off slowly with only two scorers. Alexus Sindelar scored a two-pointer for the Lady Jays. Brynnlee Marks also scored two points for the team after making both of her free throws. By the end of the quarter, the Lady Jays were behind the Gaters 4-10.

During the second quarter, the Lady Jays scored a total of five points. Gina Wragge scored four points by making a three-pointer as well as a free throw. Marks also made a free throw shot. The Gators continued their streak, scoring ten points, which ended the quarter with a score of 9-20.

Beginning the second half of the game, Wragge, Kennedy Warneke, and Sindelar all scored two points for the Lady Jays, and Marks scored four points by making two two-point shots. By the end of the quarter, the Gators racked up eight more points. The Lady Jays entered the fourth quarter trailing behind the Gators 19-28.

In the final quarter of the game, both Wragge and Warneke made a two-point shot, which resulted in four more points on the board. Sindelar scored seven points during the fourth quarter by making a two-point shot and five free throw shots. Despite their efforts, the Lady Jays were unable to beat the Gators.

Head coach of the freshmen team, Alexis Dixon, said, “All of the girls worked hard. Even though they were down, they fought back.”

The freshmen Lady Jays will play again on Saturday, January 26, at a tournament in West Point.


JH Lady Jays Battle HCC Trojans

The junior high Lady Jays won over Hartington Cedar Catholic by a score of 35-6 at home on Thursday, January 17.

Starting in the first quarter, Reagan Theisen scored one point from a free throw along with Addison Sporleder, Ella Gaes, and Alyssa Cederburg scoring two points each for the Lady Jays. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Jays held the Trojans with a score of 7-3.

In the second quarter, Theisen and Gaes scored two points from the free throw line. Keeping up the scoring streak, Morgan Moeller made a two-pointer, and Cederburg scored four points. The Trojans also added to their score and made two free throws, but the Lady Jays were still dominating. The score at halftime was 19-5.

In the third quarter, Gaes and Cederburg scored a total of four points for the Lady Jays. Moeller also made three two-pointers and one foul shot. The Trojans added just one point from a free throw onto their score, ending the third quarter with a score of 30-6.

The Lady Jays ended the game by holding the Trojans to no more points and putting up seven more of their own. Theisen made one free throw, Moeller scored a total of four points, and Morgan Schnoor made a two-pointer.

Coach Brenda Fleecs said, “The thing that I am proud of them about is that we have a week left and they are finishing really strong. They are doing the right things and really pushing through until the end.”

The junior high Lady Jays play next against Norfolk Public in Pierce on Tuesday, January 22, for their last game of the season.


Junior High Girls Take on Warriors

The junior high Lady Jays A-team hit the road to take on the Crofton Warriors on Monday, January 14, and just edged them out with a score of 22-20, while the B-team lost 10-14

In the first quarter, the Lady Jays started scoring with Raegan Theisen, Ella Gaes, and Alyssa Cederburg scoring two points each. They limited the Warriors to a four-point quarter to take an early lead. In the second quarter, the Lady Jays continued the scoring with Theisen, Addison Sporleder, and Gaes all scoring two points each. The Lady Jays ended the quarter scoring six to the Warriors’ eight, ending half with a tied score of 12-12. In the third quarter, Cederburg was the only scorer with two two-pointers and a free throw, edging out the Warriors 5-4 to go up by one going into the last quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays allowed the Warriors four points but rounded up their scoring with Gaes and Cederburg hitting two-pointer each and a free throw from Gaes.

The B team then hit the court. In the first quarter, the scoring started with Morgan Schnoor and Ciara Garcia each making a two-pointer. The Lady Jays ended the quarter ahead by a score of 4-2. In the second quarter, the Lady Jays continued the scoring with Isabella Skrdla making three two-pointers. The Warriors put up five points on the Lady Jays to end the half with a score of 10-7. In the second half, the Lady Jays weren’t able to put up any points as the Warriors managed to put away seven, to end the game with a score of 10-14.

Coach Brenda Fleecs said, “Both games were very intense close games, and I was really proud of how they continued to finish the game with good work ethics.”

The junior high Lady Jays take on Norfolk next on Tuesday, January 22, at home.
