Mrs. Brenda Fleecs’s fall American Government class presented their final projects for History Day at PHS on Friday, December 15.
History Day is an annual event that PHS participates in each year. The theme each year is determined by the nonprofit organization National History Day. This year’s theme was Conflict and Compromise, so students chose topics to fit it. Among this year’s topics were women in the military, Prohibition, Roe v. Wade, child labor laws, Women’s Suffrage, settling the Nebraska territory, and many others.
History Day provides a unique way for students to participate in a research project as part of the state standards. Students are able to pick a category that fits their talents as a means to present their research with options including an essay, a dramatic performance, or a board that presents their project. The project teaches students research skills, cooperative work, and speech skills.
History Day is also a competition that students can compete in at a national level. The national contest will be held from June 10-14 at the University of Maryland, College Park that the winners of school divisions will take part in. Pierce did not choose a winner this year, but Samantha Hartman received the highest score.
History Day is a huge undertaking for students each year, as they spend weeks researching and annotating both primary and secondary sources. Mrs. Brenda Fleecs said her advice to future students is “to not procrastinate and start early, and also make use of class time.”
