Choir Hosts Last Concert

By Haley Scholting

As the school year comes to a close, many clubs, classes, and activities are having their “lasts” of the year. Student Council has its last meeting, the band had their final big performance the last week, and even FCCLA had their final banquet for the year. Similarly, the choir had their last performance of the year on May 4.

The concert included both the junior and senior high choirs. In the junior high choir, there are 36 students. The senior high choir, on the other hand, has 17 participants.

During Monday’s concert, the junior high performed four songs. These songs were “The Oarsmen” by Meredith Tompkins, “Count on Me” arranged by Janet Day, “Seize the Day from Newsies” arranged by Roger Emerson, and “Bang the Drum All Day” arranged by Sally Albrecht.

When asked what her favorite song was, seventh-grader Haisley Dvorak stated that it was "Bang the Drum All Day."

On the other hand, the senior high performed four songs as well. The songs performed by the senior high choir were “We Are the World” arranged by Roger Emerson, “The Journey” arranged by Joseph M. Martin, “The Sound of Silence” arranged by Frank Metis, and “I Sing Because I’m Happy” by Rollo Dilworth.

Some of the senior high choir participants also performed solos in the song “We Are the World.” Soloists included juniors Addison Frye, Spencer Sindt, and Lauren Delka; sophomore Savannah Lingenfelter; and freshman Burkley Collison and Tristan Holton.

“I feel that the choir concert went super well! We all sang to the best of our ability, even with sickness going around, which was tough to work through,” Frye said. “My favorite song that we sang was ‘The Journey,’ but all of the songs we sang were unique and catchy.”

When picking the songs to be sung, Amy Barnhill, the choir director, picked the songs because she felt the kids would enjoy singing them and it would fit their voices well.

“I think it was one of the best ones (concerts) I've ever had here at Pierce. Everyone sang out and had fun doing it. I was very proud of them, and they were very well prepared,” Barnhill commented.
