Bluejay Speech Team Commands the Room at Boone CentralĀ
By Josie Painter
The Pierce High speech team loaded the bus for the first time this year on Saturday, January 24, and headed over to Albion for their second speech meet of the year. The day was long with three full rounds and no finals, but Pierce persevered.
Amidst tough competition, several of our Bluejays were able to perform very well. On the varsity side, Josie Painter, a junior, placed sixth in persuasive speaking.
Senior Mya Johnson medalled in both her events, placing seventh in serious prose and ninth in program of oral interpretation (POI).
Coming in at twelfth, Spencer Sindt took home a medal in humorous prose.
After the day was done, Johnson says, “Our growth from last week is evident, and I can’t wait to continue to see our team grow throughout the season.” She goes on to say, “I feel like I did pretty well.”
Pierce’s novice (first-year) speakers also did well at Boone. Eleanor Bauermeister, a freshman, medalled in both extemporaneous and humorous prose, earning second and fourth, respectively. In POI, senior Alanna McKeown attained a second place medal, and in serious prose, senior Skylar Stern took home fourth place.
The day was long, but after all of the speeches were done, feelings of accomplishment were high.
“I feel like the day went well,” Brayden Lambrecht, a junior who performs as a persuasive speaker, notes.
The cold weather on Saturday makes everyone want to stay inside and relax in front of the TV, but the speech team never takes a moment to rest. They will be heading to Hartington Cedar Catholic on Saturday, January 31. Be sure to wish them luck.
