New Year’s Resolutions: Yes or No?

By Elizabeth Furstenau

The 2026 year has officially begun, and among many of the new year traditions are new year’s resolutions.

For years, people have made lists of items they claim they want to accomplish in the new year. Typical resolutions include going to the gym and working out, saving money, spending less time on their phone, and countless more.

How many people still actually make resolutions? How many believe they are pointless? Are they right? It is time to answer all of these questions.

“No, I think resolutions are stupid because no one follows through,” Pierce High teacher Diana Kuehler states. “They last a good week or two, and they’re done.”

Kuehler has a good point. How many do hold up their resolutions? Well, senior Naomi Sullivan has.

“My new year's resolution was to eat clean and work out mostly everyday,” Sullivan claims. “And so far I have stuck with it.”

Does this mean that she will not quit eventually? Not essentially. As long as the effort and motivation is put into the goal, it can be accomplished.

Others have opposite opinions though. Some do not even believe that resolutions should be tied to one specific date.

“No, because you don't need a new year to set goals for yourself,” senior Cameron Kuehler believes.

The truth behind this statement is irrefutable. Why are resolutions associated with the new year only? If an individual has a goal, they should be able to pursue it at any given moment.

The controversy behind New Year’s resolutions will never fade. As long as there are those who see the importance of creating, following, and accomplishing them, they will live on.
