Senior Government Class Puts Together Wellness Week

By Brianna Rundell

In what was originally a five day plan turned into four days, wellness week made its mark on Pierce High.

The senior government classes put together a pretty great week for the high school, including  teacher challenge videos, dress-up days, and a “Monday Funday” activity.

“My favorite part about wellness week was putting together the videos that the teachers were in. The challenges that all the government seniors picked for the teachers to do were definitely the highlight of every day,” senior Chloe Bernhardt commented.

The teachers featured in the Taskmaster-like challenge videos were: Les Painter, Crys Bauermeister, Tyler Legate, Ryan Ohnoutka, Diana Kuehler, and Deb Koehlmoos.

Starting on Monday the dress-up was switch up Monday where teachers dressed as students and students dressed as teachers. Monday’s challenge video consisted of all teachers making an attempt to draw principal Mark Brahmer. Brahmer then rated the drawings from best to worst. A bonus challenge, a challenge only one teacher does, was added to each of the videos. In the first one Kuehler was challenged to “count the beans,” needless to say she did not look pleased to do so.

Monday also brought a fun school wide activity. Seven students from each grade, and seven teachers were given seven different challenges to complete. Pumpkin carving was first. Followed by an apple walk where participants had to balance an apple on their head and walk under the volleyball net, and if the apple dropped, they had to start over. After that, participants had a broom run. In this they mounted their broom and ran two laps around the gym. The last two events were a football toss, and catch the turkey. Points were then counted and the winners announced.

Tuesday's theme was take care Tuesday where the school dressed up as super heroes. Day two challenge video was a stapler relay. Teachers were challenged to pick up a stapler that was placed somewhere in their classroom and bring it to their desk without touching it. Koehlmoos had the bonus challenge for this day, she was instructed to draw a song from the bucket, walk into a classroom, sing it, and walk out without a word.

Day three video consisted of the teachers hiding a large item somewhere in the school. Boston Krueger and Kaiden Fritz were sent to find them. The bonus challenge had Ohnoutka on a mission to find a student in the school. This day’s dress up for workout Wednesday was to dress in jerseys or sports apparel.

Since there was no school on Friday due to state football in Sidney, Thursday and Friday’s videos were released on Thursday morning.

Day four video challenged the teachers to give a pep talk based on the prompt they were given. Legate and Painter had the bonus challenge. They had to battle each other in a mobile game called “Clash Royale.”

The day five video had the teachers dancing to a song they sang, even though the song they originally sang was not the song they were asked to dance to. Near the end of every video Brahmer gave peak commentary on each of the teacher’s challenges.

“Wellness Week was taken over by the seniors a few years ago as a way to get more involved in the school community and help the school that helped them grow. Every year, each class comes up with their own unique ways to help celebrate and promote wellness to the student body. This year's biggest challenge was definitely the videos that we made as a way to brighten up everyone's weeks. The Pierce High teacher challenges began as just an idea and the seniors came up with challenges, enlisted teachers, recorded footage, and edited over four hours of footage down to 90 minutes. I am impressed with how well all 41 students worked together and how hard they all pushed themselves to make wellness week a success,” government teacher Brock Bretschneider said.
