By Charlie Miller
The Pierce Jays soared through the Mid-State conference after a thrilling week of volleyball.
Pierce competed against the Norfolk Catholic Knights in the finals of the Mid-State conference tournament held at Wayne State College, where Pierce came home with a 3-1 win against the Knights.
“I'm incredibly proud of the whole team,” head coach Zach Weber says. “This is a huge accomplishment for us, and it's a great indicator of the progress we've made this season. This group deserves success.”
The win marks the fifth consecutive Mid-State conference championship for the Bluejays.
Leading the team in kills was Nora Herian with 24 against the Knights, along with senior Abigail Cone with 16, followed by Lydia Cone with three kills. Naomi Sullivan and Adrienne Riggert had two kills each.
Herian was also hot at the net on defense, as she led the team in blocks with four, with A. Cone following behind with two.
“It was a great win for us,” Herian says. “I'm really happy with how we came out, and I thought we really dominated the net. This win will hopefully give us confidence going into sub-districts next week.”
The Bluejays faced Boone Central on Oct. 20, battled Guardian Angels Central Catholic (GACC) on Oct. 21, and clashed with the Norfolk Catholic Knights in the Mid-State showdown on Oct. 23.
Pierce swept Boone Central in straight sets, dominating with scores of 25-15, 25-10, and 25-19.
The stats from the night against Boone Central show that Herian led the team in kills with 17, followed by A. Cone with 11. Josie Painter also made her mark with 17 digs, and Herian added 13 digs.
Against GACC in the semifinals, Pierce continued their winning streak, taking all three sets with scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-16.
