Bluejays Read Through the Week

By Grace Retzlaff

Teen Read Week was first introduced in 1998 by the Young Adult Library Services Association, and the purpose of Teen Read Week is to get teens excited and involved in reading.

So how is Teen Read Week celebrated at Pierce?

The theme this year was Be a Reader, and to start the week off, on Monday, students were invited to have a book checked out in the library, and then they could pick up a book bingo sheet.

Moving on to Tuesday, students were able to stop in and make a sweet bookworm treat and enjoy a cupcake they had decorated under the condition that they had a book checked out.

“Tuesday was my favorite day, the cupcakes were a good way to get students to stop in,” senior Naomi Sullivan states.

On Wednesday, the library was testing student and staff book knowledge. Every hour students were sent book related trivia. Students could stop into the library to answer the book trivia questions throughout the day for a scratch card which revealed prizes.

“My favorite day this week was the trivia day, I think it was a good way to get the school involved,” senior Mikenzie Lawrence states.

On Thursday, students could escape the library, or attempt to, in order to earn a chance at the prize. The short story, “Examination Day” had an escape room, or challenges, set up. The top winners were awarded a prize.

Friday was all about guessing games. These games were in the library as well as online.

Teen Read Week annually occurs in October.
