Volleyball Takes the Win Against Elkhorn Valley
By Zane McKeown
The Bluejays met Elkhorn Valley on Thursday, October 16, for a thrilling game of volleyball, playing four sets and winning the game 3-1.
“We played well enough to win. I’m happy with the way we handled adversity,” head coach Zach Weber said.
The first set, the Jays started with a 25-16 victory.
Elkhorn Valley defeated Pierce in the second set with a score of 25-15.
The third set was a close one, but Pierce came through in the end to win 25-23.
In the fourth and final set, the Bluejays finished strong, 25-20.
Junior Josie Painter had the most digs with a total of 19, followed by Nora Herian with 15, and Abigail Cone picked up 13 digs.
A. Cone recorded the most kills for the Jays with 22, with Herian following closely behind with 21. Lydia Cone had four kills, while Adrienne Riggert and Emily Endorf managed to get two kills each.
Riggert also had 45 assists on the night.
“I thought that the biggest takeaway from that game was how we fought back and made plays to put them away. We mixed up our offense throughout the night, which helped open up options for us and get our hitters on single blocks,” A. Cone said.

The Pierce Jays suffered another loss of the season to Guardian Angels Central Catholic (GACC), falling 3-2 on Tuesday, October 14.
To start, Pierce won both the first and second sets with the scores of 25-18 and 26-24.
However, in the third set, GACC defeated Pierce 27-25.
In the fourth set, Pierce struggled, and despite the Jays’ best efforts, Pierce lost 25-21.
In the fifth and final set, the volleyball team put in a lot of effort and fight, but could not secure the win; the set ended with GACC winning 15-11.
“I think GACC is a very well-rounded team; they are very balanced in the front row, and they kept us out of system. In the first two sets, we did a better job of keeping them out of system, and they weren't able to play with our offense,” senior Naomi Sullivan says. “Our serve and serve receive were great, especially in those first two sets. Coming away from a loss like that is always hard, but as a team, I know what we are capable of, and we are all ready for everyone else to see it.”
For stats on the night, Nora Herian led the team in kills with 29, Abigail Cone put away 14, and Lydia Cone contributed six.
Kendyl Olson carried the team in aces with four, and Haley Scholting and Josie Painter added three each.
Painter and Herian led the team in digs with 17, A. Cone dug up 15, and Emily Endorf and Scholting had six each.
“Tuesday just wasn't really our night,” Herian states. “Our offense wasn't producing like it usually does for us, and that really just slowed down our play. We're ready to play them again and show them what we can really do.”
