Marching into the First Competition of the Year
By Grace Retzlaff
Marching band takes a lot of time, hard work, and dedication. So how does the band prepare for competitions?
The band rehearses every day during first period, and about two-thirds of the band has split block, which means they have half the time to rehearse.
During that time, the whole band works as a team to be efficient with the time they have in the morning.
Along with school practices, the band also has a week-long summer camp where they learn the basics of marching band. During these practices, the band learns to memorize their music, marching, and placements for the competitions.
“It isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it,” band director Mike Sindt states.
The band debuted their show at the Pierce marching festival on October 1.
“I feel they did a really good job and did very well,” Sindt says.
The band received a superior rating, which is the highest any team could get.
“The band performed very well for this being our first competition, but we could definitely improve on a few things,” drum section leader Lauren Delka states
The band is off to their next competition at Yankton on October 11, where they march in a parade across the bridge.
After the parade, the band will perform their field show in the afternoon at 12:15.
