Bluejay Branch Teaches Kids how to Save
By Brynn Schwartz
The Bluejay branch of Midwest Bank at Pierce Elementary is helping kids learn the basics of saving money. The program, which is overseen by the Nebraska Banking Association, lets students put money into savings during their elementary years.
When students complete sixth grade, they get all their money back in a check. They can choose to open an account at Midwest Bank or just keep the money to use for something else.
“It’s important to save money for things down the road,” Krista Bailey, one of the bank personnel who introduced the program to elementary students, said. “We are a society of instant gratification, and so it's just really important to be able to learn how to save for something.”
The Bluejay branch also shows the bank's commitment to being active in the community.
“Being able to be in the elementary school is really important,” Bailey said. Just teaching the kids about savings and about how banking works.”
The program gives students a chance to practice saving early, helping them build good money habits for the future.
