Student Council Starts Off Strong
By Lauren Delka
The Pierce High student council joined for a meeting in the commons of the high school to inform new and former members of the upcoming year’s plans on Tuesday, August 19.
The student council officers introduced themselves to the group with an explanation of their role in the council. The president is Sydney Kuper; the vice president is Emily Endorf; the treasurer is Brock Collison; the secretary is Mya Johnson; the historian is Haley Scholting, and the school board representative is Josie Painter. The student council sponsor is Deb Koehlmoos and the assistant sponsor is Melissa Legate.
The student council welcomed five new members to the council: Gabriella Drahota, seventh grader; Natalie Endorf, 10th grader; Nora Herian, 11th grader; Jaymison Neal, seventh grader, and Alyssa Kuper 12th grader. These new members signed up to have their names on a ballot and were voted in by their classmates with a majority vote. If students who signed up for a spot on the ballot were not voted in and still wished to be on the council, they could write a paragraph explaining why they would be an asset to the student council. The write-in candidates must then attend three consecutive meetings before the student council votes on whether or not these students will join the group.
The meeting began with the students introducing themselves and telling the group all the sports and extracurricular activities they are in besides student council. Each student is in multiple events in addition to the student council.
The time students have is limited with all the activities and schoolwork they have throughout the year, but they still make time for the student body and Pierce community. The student council puts on many fun events and helps provide to many people need. Just a few of these events include putting on the Winter Royalty dance for the Pierce High School students, Powder Puff games, halftime fundraisers during the games in each season, teacher appreciation week, and many more special functions.
The student council is in charge of "committees" led by the members. In this first meeting, each member talked about ideas for this year’s committees, and how to improve committees from previous years. Each committee has a leader, usually a junior or senior, and other members who are interested in being a part of the committee. Each member is in charge of being in at least two committees. Juniors are expected to lead at least one committee if they have been in student council for one year. Seniors are supposed to lead at least two committees. The council members voted on what committees they should put on for the Pierce student body and community, but all committees that were passed in the meeting will be voted on in a separate meeting only including the officers.
The student council members not only put on fun and beneficial events for others, but also give the students a leg to stand on in the community.
“We’re the voice,” Deb Koehlmoos, sponsor of the student council for 39 years, states. “We can be the voice of the students if there are big concerns.”
In the end, the meeting came to a close with many ideas for the upcoming school year, as well as the planning and hosting of each committee for the benefit of the students and community members.
