Pierce High Volleyball is Ready to Attack the Season
By: Naomi Sullivan
Attacking this preseason, the Pierce High volleyball team is already hard at work. Having lost seven seniors last year, the remaining seven varsity returners are looking to help lead the team this season, and the new varsity members are seeking rotation spots up for grabs.
Official fall practice began on August 11. The first game for the Pierce Bluejays will be on August 28, against the Stanton Mustangs.
“I'm very happy with our first week of practice. Effort and attitude have been great, and I can see how much our girls want to improve. We definitely have a long way still to go, but it's been a great week,” head coach Zach Weber comments. “It feels great to be back in the gym and in our season routine--my favorite time of the year for sure. A lot of that comes from the energy of the kids in the gym. I love working with such a motivated group.”
Weber also notes that Pierce will be a strong offensive team again this season.
“This is truly one of the most, if not the most, balanced fronts I've had the opportunity to coach,” Weber continues. “I also feel good about our ability to pass. We have about four or five girls I feel extremely comfortable putting on the court in the back row. Our three setters also continue to improve. It will take a little bit to put it together, but once we find our rhythm, I believe it could be something special.”
The team will face some challenging games early on in the season.
“We don't get the opportunity to grow into the beginning of the year because we will see some of the best in the state during our first couple of weeks. We need to learn very quickly what it means to compete at a high level. I'm excited to see how we handle the challenge,” Weber says.
“Some strengths we have going into the season are our returning outsides, Abbie Cone and Nora Herian. They played a large part in our success last year, and they will continue to play a large part this year,” senior hitter Emily Endorf states.
