Three Girls Take Top Honors

Three members of the Pierce wrestling team finished with top honors at the Grand Island Northwest (GINW) meet, while the other nine members of the team all finished as medalists on Saturday, January 18. 

Taking top honors were Hadleigh Collison (115), Jayan Sackville (120), and Isabelle Kuehler (155). 

Collison started off her day pinning Paloma Carbajal from Grand Island. In the semifinals Collison won in a 15-0 technical fall over Maiya Linden from GINW, and in the first place match pinned Arianna Schutt of York. Collison is now 17-2 this season.

J. Sackville started her day with a bye, then pinned Harmonie Carr of GINW and Bristol Prado of Chadron to claim her first place victory. 

Kuehler, who is 17-1 so far this season, pinned Yuli Macario of Grand Island and Taytum Methe from York. In the first place match Kuehler won in a 4-0 decision of Addison Diers from Chadron.

Other medalists from Pierce include Mia Sackville, who wrestled at 100 and finished fourth. Like her sister, M. Sackville had a bye in her first round. In the semifinals, M. Sackville lost by technical fall 19-3 to Annah Perdue of York. In the third place match M. Sackville lost by fall to Jersey Anderson from GINW.

At 105, Peyton Brunckhorst finished fourth and started her day by receiving a bye in her first round and falling to Josephine Werner of Chadron in the semifinals. In Brunckhorst’s final round, she fell to Gracie Huggins of GINW. 

Placing second for the Jays was Isabelle Streff (110) who pinned Allianna Guerrero of GINW in the quarterfinals and Alayna Gomez of Grand Island in the semifinals. In the first place match, Streff fell to Taylee Williamson of Chadron. 

In addition to Collison at 115, Alexis Asmus also wrestled in this weight class. Asmus pinned Shaynna Bocanegra of Grand Island in the quarterfinals but fell to Schutt of York in the semifinals. During the consolation semifinals, Asmus fell toPaloma Carbajal of Grand Island. 

Finishing in third place was Evelyn Skrdla (125) who fell to Bridget Kavan of York and Kali Kuck of GINW. Then in her final round Skrdla pinned Karla Hernandez from York. 

At 130, MaKenna Blecher ended her day with runner up honors. During the quarterfinals, Bleacher pinned Lillian Harsh of GINW, and then in the semifinals she pinned Gianna LaPorte of Chadron. In the first place match, Blecher fell to Leon of GINW.

Cailynn Gardner, wrestling at 140, placed second for Pierce after pinning Aubrey Keene of GINW in round one. However, Gardner fell to Graycen O’Donnell of Chadron in round two. 

Wrestling at 145, Lainey Jensen ended in third. Jensen received a bye in her first round, and fell to Ellie Smidt of GINW in the semifinals. In her final match Jensen pinned Allie Arreola from York. 

Shaylee Gardner (170) finished fourth for the Bluejays after receiving a bye in her first round and falling to Avery Albers of York in the semifinals. S. Gardner then pinned teammate Reniya Miller in the consolation semifinals, but then fell to Megan Boyd of GINW during the third place match. 

R. Miller, also at 170, faced Vivian Golembiewski of Chadron and lost by fall and then lost by fall to S. Gardner. 

At 190, Candace Miller ended in second place after receiving a bye in her first round and then pinning Freya Hills of York in the semifinals. C. Miller fell to Graclyn Simmons of GINW in the first place match. 

Finally, at 235, Lauren Ueding finished in fourth for the Bluejays, falling to Maddaleinne Esquitin from Grand Island, Cali Gutierrez from GINW and Lauryn Mattox of York. 

The Pierce girls will be at home for a triangular with Norfolk Catholic and Battle Creek on Thursday, January 23.
