Girls Golf Competes at Mid-State Tournament
By Payton Cederburg
The girls golf team took sixth place with a collective score of 455 in the Mid-State conference tournament on October 3 at the O’Neill Country Club.
“The meet went okay. We struggled the front nine, but did a great job of coming back and shooting closer to our averages,” head coach Jason Freudenburg states. “We missed a lot of putts at the conference meet. Those putts will fall at districts and the girls are going to be in a great position to score well. I am excited to see them perform well at districts.”
Individually, Rylee Altwine medaled for the team, coming in at second place, shooting a 90. Veronica Orona shot a 115. Soiyer Pfeiffer ended with a 119. Brailey Jensen scored a 131 and not far behind her was Avery Brunckhorst with a 132.
“The wind played a big factor, and I do not think the meet went as good as it should have,” Altwine recalls, “but I am pretty excited for districts because I still have not hit my best score this year.”
The next competition for the Jays is at the Wayne Country Club for districts on October 8.
Bluejays Win Triangular
By Abbie Cone
On Tuesday, October 1, the Pierce Bluejays participated in their last home meet of the season and came home with the win over Elkhorn Valley and Wayne.
“A lot of our girls golfed well yesterday, and as a team, we also golfed very well. It was our lowest nine hole total that we have had this year, so that’s great going into conference,” head coach Jason Freudenburg remarks. “For about a month and a half now we’ve been pushing to find ways to score, and that has sunk in with our girls. Moving forward into conference and districts, we’re definitely in a really good place.”
For individual scores, junior Rylee Altwine shot a 44, one short of the school record for the lowest nine hole course. Senior Veronica Orona finished with a 56, and senior Soiyer Pfeiffer followed close behind with a 57. Sophomore Brailey Jensen and freshman Avery Brunkhorst each shot a 65.
“I think it was definitely a confidence booster after I tied my nine hole PR,” Rylee Altwine states. “I’m excited to see what I can accomplish at conference. We had a lot of fun, didn’t let the bad shots get to us, and enjoyed our last home meet.”
The Bluejay golf team will compete at districts at the Wayne Country Club on October 8.
