Pierce Golfs Their Way to State

By Elizabeth Furstenau

It was a bright and sunny day to go golfing when the varsity golfers took a trip to Hartington for districts on Tuesday, May 14. Travis Emory placed third, claiming his ticket to state, while the team took eighth place as a whole.

Emory ended the day with a 76, the lowest score on the team. This will be the third time Emory goes to state.

“Getting to state is not an easy accomplishment in golf, so I’m very proud that I was able to get there three times,” Emory states. “Golfing with kids from around the state is a fun experience, and I’m excited to represent Pierce High at state.”

Cooper Wachholtz finished with an 83, placing 13th. Taking 49th place, Champion White shot a 98. Following close behind in 50th, Tyler Schulz scored a 99. Lastly, Camden Jansen ended the day with a 102 at 53rd place.

“I’m very proud of Travis overall. He had a great season and obviously a great showing at districts. A 76 is an incredible number on that course,” claims coach Zach Weber. “Cooper was heartbreakingly close. For him to come so close and fall short makes me feel really bad for him, but I’m also excited. We obviously know he’s the caliber player that can play at the state tournament, and I look forward to seeing what he is going to do next year. And for the rest of the team, the number we needed to beat to get state as a team was a number that we reached a few times this season, so it would have been nice to get it once more. A little bit of our inexperience kind of showed and there was a lot more pressure, a lot more nerves that really, I think, made the difference, but overall it was a great season for those guys; I’m proud of them. I think that we did a lot of very good things, and I am looking forward to next week with Travis.”
