Two Qualify for State Journalism Contest

Mark Monday, April 22, as an important date on the calendar as two Pierce High journalism students, Emma Risinger and Garett Riedel, will compete at the NSAA Class B state journalism contest in Norfolk.

“I am so grateful to have qualified for state journalism,” remarks Risinger, a senior and yearbook editor. “I am excited to compete against some of our state’s most talented journalists.”

Risinger qualified for state in sports news writing for her story about Pierce defeating Central City.

Highlighting a spectacular wrap up to her journalism career, Risinger says, “I have taken journalism as a class since as soon as it was available to me sophomore year, so this is a very rewarding moment.”

Riedel will compete with the eight finalists in advertising. He qualified for state finals with his advertisement for buying a yearbook that featured exchange student Nils Røstad.

“The thing I’m most excited about for state is just the experience of it. It’s going to be surreal,” Riedel comments, “It’s my first year.”

As a first year journalism and yearbook student Riedel mentions, “Some knowledge that I’ve gained is basically the experience of just being in class, being taught by my teacher, and just having help from my other classmates.”

Both Risinger and Riedel are guaranteed a state medal, and will compete at 12:45 p.m. on April 22, and the awards ceremony will be livestreamed at approximately 2:30.
