Emory Finalist for National Merit
By Elizabeth Furstenau
The National Merit Scholarship is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and college and senior Travis Emory has been chosen as a finalist.
Emory says, “Less than 1% of graduating high school seniors become National Merit finalists, so it is a really big deal. I’m not really sure what my chances are of winning a scholarship, but either way, just becoming a finalist is a huge honor in itself.”
There are certain requirements to qualify for the scholarship. First, the student must take the PSAT/NMSQT during his or her junior year of high school. Second, the student must be enrolled as a high school student and plan to enroll in college full time by the fall after his or her high school graduation. Lastly, the student must attend high school in the U.S., the District of Columbia, or U.S. commonwealth and territory; or meet citizenship requirements for students attending high school outside the U.S.
Pierce High counselor Danielle Goetsch says, “The benefit of being a National Merit Scholar is receiving merit scholarships. Students also have access to prestigious internship opportunities and research opportunities.”
