Lady Jays Defeat HCC

On Friday, February 9, the Lady Jays Basketball team defeated Hartington Cedar Catholic at home, ending the game 39-33.
Head coach Darin Suckstorf comments, “The girls did a great job of closing the game in the fourth quarter. They overcame a run by Cedar and found a way to regain the lead and knock down free throws to win it. The last few games we have not started the third quarter with great execution, we are looking for ways to come out with more fire and execution.” 
In the first quarter the Lady Jays scored 19 points to Cedar’s 14. Leading the team in points was Ava Knox with seven points. Abigail Cone scored six points. Hadley Wragge, Skylar Scholting, and Nora Herian all scored two points each.
In the second quarter each team scored six points. Cone made one free throw. Knox made a 2-pointer. Scholting made three free throws. 
In the third quarter, Pierce scored three points to Cedar’s eight points. Cone scored a two-pointer and Scholting sank one out of two free throws. 
In the final quarter, Pierce gained 11 points and defense held Cedar so they only scored five points. Wragge and Cone both scored a 2-pointer. Scholting made two 2-pointers and three out of four free throws. 
Cone led the team in offensive rebounds with five, Wragge with three, Knox and Herian with one each. Defensively, Wragge led in rebound with six, Scholting with five, Herian with four, and Cone with three. 
Knox had three steals, Scholting had two, Cone had one, and Wragge had one. Wragge and Cone both had one block throughout the game.
Cone comments, “We eliminated Cedar's transition game, and even though they hit a lot of 3’s we found a way to adapt to that and ultimately came out with a great win together.”


Pierce Lady Jays Lose to GACC

On Thursday, February 8, the Pierce Lady Jays faced off the Guardian Angels Central Catholic Bluejays, and despite fighting till the last buzzer, GACC defeated the Lady Jays with a score of 50-31. 
Abigail Cone led with 11 total points. She made five 2-pointers and one free throw. Also, Cone had five rebounds and four assists.
Also with five rebounds was Hadley Wragge. She contributed one point to the score. 
Skylar Scholting added 10 points for the team. Scholting had three assists. She shot and made three 2-pointers, two 3-pointers, and two free throws.
Nora Herian, with three 2-pointers and one free throw, scored seven points. 
Haley Scholting scored the last two points with one 2-pointer.
GACC led the first quarter with 14 points. The Lady Jays put up a good fight, but ended the quarter with 10 points, leaving the final score 14-10.
Dribbling over to the second quarter, the score was close, but the Lady Jays were still behind with only six points while the GACC Bluejays had seven. The teams ended the first half with a score of 21-16.
Beginning the second half the Lady Jays fought, but unfortunately only added six points to their score while the GACC Bluejays added 17. The third quarter ended with a 39-22 scoreboard.
In the last quarter, GACC kept their lead, gaining 12 more points. The Lady Jays scored nine more. Ending the game with a 19 point lead, the GACC Bluejays beat the Pierce Lady Jays 50-31.
Head coach Darin Suckstorf says, “I thought the girls played a great first half, but had a tough 3rd quarter that we couldn't overcome.  We have to give GACC a lot of credit, we will move on and get better and learn from this game.”


Pierce Lady Jays Dominate Clarkson-Leigh Patriots

The Pierce Lady Jays traveled to Clarkson-Leigh on Tuesday, February 6, to battle against the Patriots, and the Lady Jays dominated, 31-25. Lone senior basketball player Madelyn Hanson says, “Our defense was very good tonight, and we were patient on offense until we found a perfect shot, which led us to the win.”
Beginning with the first quarter, Haley Scholting and Skylar Scholting each had two points each and Abigail Cone had four points. This ended the first quarter with eight points, leaving the score 8-2 with Lady Jays leading.Dribbling on over to the second quarter, both of the Scholting girls again added two points to the score, leaving the score at halftime 12-11 in favor of Pierce.Going onto the third quarter, Cone had five points and Scholting added another two, ending the third quarter tied at 19. Lastly, moving onto the fourth quarter, Aubrey Hanson, Nora Herian, and both Scholting’s all contributed to the score by adding two each. And finally Cone scored four points. All of these added 12 points to the final score and ending the quarter with 31 points, grabbing the 31-25 win.
Head coach Darin Suckstorf states, “The girls had a great start to the game winning the first quarter 8-2. But the most impressive was them overcoming a run by Clarkson-Leigh and tying it back up by the end of the third quarter, which ultimately gave us momentum in the fourth to pull away and win it.” He also says, “The girls again played some great defense and executed on the offensive end to beat a rated Clarkson-Leigh team.”
