Girls Wrestling Reigns Victorious at Home Invite

On Saturday, December 16, the Pierce girls wrestling team claimed the first-place title at their home invitational. The team totaled 134.5 points, going up against 19 other teams.
Wrestling at 100 pounds, the now 10-4 Icis Sackville received a bye in the first round. In the second round, I. Sackville lost to the 11-1 Marissa Bennett from Elkhorn Valley, who won by sudden victory, 9-7. In her third match, I. Sackville pinned Cenna Johnson of Stanton, Yuritza Mejia of Schuyler in 0:17 in the third and fourth rounds. Schuyler’s Jessica Ortega won by fall over Sackville in the fifth round. I. Sackville gained her team six points.
Wrestling at 105, the 3-5 Lauren Delka received a bye in her first round. Elizabeth Juan Lucas of Madison claimed the fall over Delka in the second round. In Delka’s third match, she received a bye. Yaritza Mejia of Schuyler pinned Delka in the fourth round.
The 9-1 Isabelle Streff, wrestling at 110, pinned Savannah Zarek of Columbus in 0:20 in the first round. Second round, Sophia Turpitt of Fremont pinned Streff. Streff went on to pin Kari Gonzalez of Madison in 0:15, and in the third place match, Streff pinned Nadia Pond of Schuyler. Streff placed third in her bracket and scored 16 team points.
“I think I did really good on Saturday,” said Streff. “I was really happy I placed, especially as a freshman. I wasn’t expecting that, but I did. There’s a few things we could work on, but other than that we're doing really good. It’s technique issues, nothing else.”
The 2-4 Evelyn Skrdla wrestled at 115. Marissa Anderson of Columbus pinned Skrdla in the first round. Skrdla received a bye in the second round. Then Skrdla fell to Ester Miranda of Schuyler in her final match of the day.
Hadleigh Collison (11-5) wrestled at 115, and in the first round, she pinned Pierce’s Jayan Sackville. In the second round, Collison won by an 11-1 major decision over Paityn Wyatt of Aurora. Courtney Briones of Schuyler pinned Collison in the third round. In the consolation semifinals, Collison pinned Ester Miranda of Schuyler. Marissa Anderson of Columbus pinned Collison in the third-place match, placing Collison fourth with 14 team points.
J. Sackville (3-4) also wrestled at 115. Collison pinned J. Sackville in the first match. In the second match, J. Sackville pinned Savannah Paulson of Winside. Tekamah-Herman’s Donnie Seeley won by fall over J. Sackville in the third round.
The 8-5 Samantha Painter, wrestling at 120, pinned Wayne’s Megan Magnuson in the first round. Second round, Maddy Pineda of Schuyler pinned S. Painter. S. Painter rebounded and pinned Macy Wilson of Wayne and Montse Huisman of Fremont in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. In the consolation semifinal, S. Painter pinned Winside’s Elayna Hoskinson. Pineda pinned S. Painter in the third-place match. S. Painter placed fourth in her bracket and totaled 17 points.
Maggie Painter (9-1), wrestling at 125, pinned Elkhorn Valley’s Caydence Liester in the first round and pinned Emerson Penne, also of Elkhorn Valley, in the second round. In the first-place match, M. Painter pinned Madilyn Larrick of Fort Calhoun, placing M. Painter first and adding 24 team points.
Wrestling at 130, 10-3 Hayle DeBoer received a bye in her first match. In the second round, DeBoer fell to Nyla Bolles of Wayne. DeBoer received a bye in the third round. In her fourth match, DeBoer pinned Alison Dill of Fort Calhoun. DeBoer her next two matches by a 7-0 and a 6-3 decision, respectively, over Martina Alonzo-Gomez Angelina Leininger of Aurora. DeBoer placed third with 13 points.
The 6-4 Karina Willits, wrestling at 135, pinned Kaylei McIntosh of Wayne in the first round. In the second round, Emily Bohlman of Aurora pinned Willits. Gracie Trejo of Columbus won in sudden victory 1, 9-7 over Willits in the third round. Willits contributed four team points.
Cailynn Gardner (3-5) wrestled at 140, and in the first match, she received a bye. Londyn Teahon of Aurora pinned C. Gardner in the second round. In the third round, C. Gardner received a bye. In the fourth round, Emily Jaeger of Winside won by decision, 10-3, over C. Gardner.
Lainey Jensen (4-7), wrestled at 145 and fell to Carly Wemhoff of Schuyler in the first round. Jensen received a bye in the second round. In Jensen’s third match, she won by a 5-2 decision over Violet Carstensen of Aurora. Battle Creek’s Briley Koehler won by pinning Jensen in the third place match. Jensen placed fourth and scored 6.5 team points.
Wrestling at 155, Isabelle Kuehler (11-2), received a bye in her first round. Then Kuehler pinned Sophia Peterson of Fremont and Ashlynn Whitley of Lyons-Decatur Northeast. In the first-place match, Kuehler won in sudden victory 1, 3-1, over Ella May Shevlin from Columbus. Kuehler was the champion in her bracket and scored 24 team points.
The 7-4 Shaylee Gardner, wrestling at 170, pinned Danica Sheppard of Battle Creek in 0:26 in the first round. Pierce’s Candace Miller won by decision over S. Gardner in the second round. In the third round, S. Gardner pinned Brooklyn Tolzman of Lyons-Decatur Northeast. In S. Gardner’s fourth and final match, S. Gardner fell to Raelyn Brummels of Elkhorn Valley. S. Gardner gained her team seven points.
Also wrestling at 170, Miller (3-4), received a bye in her first match. Second round, Miller won by decision over S. Gardner. Jennifer Sanchez of Madison pinned Miller in the third round. In the fourth round, Miller fell to Sheccid Vallin of Fremont.
Lauren Ueding (3-6), wrestled at 190. Fremont’s Hailey O’Brien pinned Ueding in the first round. Ueding then pinned Nadine Williams of Fremont in the second round. In the third round, Ueding fell to Gina Alba of Schuyler. Ueding scored three team points.
Pierce girls wrestling will compete again at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 22, in a dual meet at Bennington High School.
