Pierce Boys Basketball Win Against Howells-Dodge

By Grace Behmer

The boys basketball team opened their season at Howells-Dodge on Thursday, November 30, with a 41-34 win.

The Pierce boys started strong and won the first quarter, leading 14-0. During the second quarter the Bluejays were outscored by the Jaguars 14-7, but still retained a 21-14 lead. The third quarter the Bluejays held on defensively, only giving up five points to maintain a 27-19 lead. During the final quarter the Bluejays kept fairly even with the Jaguars, only letting them score 14 while the Jays scored 15, which left the final score at  41-34 in favor of the Bluejays.

The team played hard for four quarters against Howells-Dodge. For the first game, it was good to see players step up in new roles. We were able to come away with a 41-34 win against a competitive Howells-Dodge team and get started off on the right track,” says coach Alex Thramer.

Deon Watts made three 2-point shots for the Bluejays, Keaton Frazier made four 2-point shots, leaving the team with a total of seven 2-point shots for the entire game.

Travis Emory, Brock Collison and Frazier each added two 3-point shots leaving the team with a total of six three point shots.

The Jays shot  60% from the free throw line, completing nine out of 15 shots.

Champion White had a total of four assists for the Bluejays. Fellow senior, Watts, managed two steals during the game.

Frazier led the team in rebounds and scoring, capping off a double double night bringing down 10 rebounds and contributing 17 points to the winning effort. Watts also added a lot to the effort, scoring 11 and pulling in eight rebounds.

Other scorers for Pierce were Emory with seven and Collison with six.

We played pretty well with only one starter back from last year. Keaton had a really nice game which put us over the top in the end,” states Emory, a senior.

Catch the Jays at home on Friday, December 8, as they host Boone Central.
