Two Seniors Recognized for Outstanding PSAT Performance

By Emma Risinger

Seniors Travis Emory and Noah Jones of Pierce High School received the National Rural and Small Town Award (NRSTA) that was presented by a National Recognition Program through the College Board, which seeks to increase visibility of black, latino, and rural students to colleges.

The NRSTA specifically is a recognition of rural and small town students who have both a GPA of at least 3.5, and performed outstandingly well on the PSAT/NMSQT®, PSAT™ 10, and/or AP® Exams.

Guidance counselor Mrs. Danielle Goetsch highlights the significance of the award when she said, “Students who receive the awards increase their opportunities for state and national scholarships. They are in the running to be a National Merit Scholar. The National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program specifically honors those students who score in the top of the nation on the PSAT during their junior year and who are from a rural area.”

Emory and Jones performed particularly well on the PSAT.

Emory expressed his gratitude for being nominated. “I think it’s pretty cool to get an award that is more specialized for small town students around the country,” he said. “Being recognized nationally in anything isn’t something to take for granted.”

Recipients of the award gain the benefits of standing out amongst other students, accessing scholarships and financial aid, and connecting with colleges.
