Girls Wrestle at Westpoint

The Pierce girls wrestling team had a successful day at the Battle at the Point wrestling tournament, held in West Point, placing third out of 30 teams. 

Pierce came home with six varsity medalists and six JV medalists. 

Mia Sackville started it off for the girls wrestling at 100 pounds. M. Sackville’s first match ended with her losing by fall to Nattlie Hull of Scribner Snyder in 1:48. Her second match ended with Riley Hohn of Weeping Water winning by fall in 0:18.

For the 105 weight category, Icis Sackville placed fourth, but she began her day pinning Alondra Salazar of Grand Island in 1:34. I. Sackville’s second match ended with her pinning Danika Runnels of Niobrara Verdigre in 1:32, but her final match of the day ended with a loss by medical forfeit to Elizabeth Juan Lucas of Madison.

Wrestling at 120, and also placing fourth for the Lady Jays was Hadleigh Collison. She started off her day by winning by fall in 1:18 over Genesis Solis from Grand Island. Her semifinal match ended by falling to Lacy Lemburg of Lakeview in 5:03. For the third-place match, Collison lost to Chelsey Robinson of Omaha North by fall in 6:00. 

Wrestling for the JV team at 120 pounds, Jayan Sackville brought home first place for the Lady Jays by pinning all of her opponents. In her first round match, in 0:41 she pinned Jacey Hassler of Battle Creek, then in her second round match, she pinned Destiny Reyes of Omaha North in 2:10, and finally in her championship match, J. Sackville pinned in 2:38 Nicole Wacker of Yutan.

Continuing on, at 125 Isabelle Skrdla placed fifth for the Lady Jays. She began her day pinning Karlie Pelc of Lakeview in 1:46. The quarterfinals match ended with a loss by fall to Jaycee Bruns from Wayne in 1:04. In her consolation matches, I. Skrdla won by fall over Katie Elder of Wahoo in 2:04, and she won by fall over Kim Gonzalez of Grand Island in 4:17. In the battle for fifth place, I. Skrdla won by fall in 3:45 over Adilene Delgadillo from South Sioux City Girls. 

At 125 for the JV, Pierce brought a number of wrestlers. Savannah Beutler (125) placed first in this tournament for the Lady Jays in the JV division. To begin, Beutler won by fall over Hodhan Mohammed of South Sioux City in 0:26. She then won by forfeit over Brittany Olson of Neligh Oakdale. In Beutler’s final round, she won first by a 10-4 decision over Wendi Silverthorn from Viborg Hurley. 

Also at 125, Alanna McKeown placed second in JV. She began by pinning Yailin Reynoso of South Sioux City in 3:10 and Lexi Jonas from Wahoo in 3:17. Then in her final match of the day, McKeown lost by fall in 3:33 against Brooklyn Holtz from West Point-Beemer.

Samantha Painter (125) brought home a third place JV medal. She began by losing by fall to Sierra Heckenlaible of Lyons-Decatur Northeast in 2:37. S.Painter won by fall over Valentina Dorado of Madison in 3:57 in her second match. In her final round of the day, S. Painter lost by fall to Jaden Schultz from West Point-Beemer in 1:26.

Next up for the varsity team at 130 was Maggie Painter who earned second. M. Painter started off on the right foot by pinning Chloe Reynolds of Niobrara Verdigre in 1:01, Briannah Kutschkau of Grand Island in 3:00, and Jordan Aschoff from Norfolk Catholic in 2:50. In her final match M. Painter lost by fall to Ann Marie Meiman of Omaha North in 2:47. 

“I think West Point’s tournament was a great experience for all of us, and we will all continue to grow as the season progresses,” remarks M. Painter.

For the JV team at 130, Hayle DeBoer placed second. She began her day falling to Amalie Bergstrom of West Point-Beemer in 0:55. DeBoer then went on to pin Ngan Le of South Sioux City in 0:38, and in her final match of the day pinned Isabelle Derby of Platteview in 0:38. 

Next up for the varsity, Angeline Skrdla (135) placed second. A. Skrdla began her day pinning in 2:34 Marissa Colegrove of Lakeview. A. Skrdla then went on to win by fall over Ashlynn Boell from West Point-Beemer in 3:01 and in the semi finals won by fall over Megan Robinson of Wahoo in 4:59. In the first place match, A. Skrdla fell to Selena Zamora of South Sioux City in 1:51.

At 145 for the varsity team, Claudia Riggert netted herself a successful day. Riggert began with a loss by fall in 2:20 to Marke Zeleny of Oakland Craig. She then won by disqualification over Avery Hawke from Grand Island, but Riggert then fell to Stephanie Olivarez from South Sioux City in 1:49. 

Next up at 155 pounds, Isabelle Kuehler began her day pinning Piper Penny-Hall of Platteview in 1:26. Her next match ended with a loss by fall at hands of Anyia Roberts of Grand Island in 4:38. Kuehler won her next match by fall over Alizabeth Whitley of Lyons-Decatur Northeast in 3:37. In Kuehler’s last match, she lost by a 6-4 decision against Jaisie Janssen of Crofton. 

For the JV team at 155, Candace Miller placed second for the Lady Jays. In her first match, C. Miller won by fall over Annabella Phillips of Elkhorn in 4:43. In her last match of the day, C. Miller lost by fall in 2:28 to Amethyst James from Bellevue East. 

Katelyn Gubbels wrestled at 170 pounds for the Lady Jays. Gubbels began her day by pinning Rayna Miller of Viborg Hurley in 0:19. In her next match of the day Gubbels lost by fall to Annabelle Poppe of Crofton in 1:54. Then in the next matches, Gubbels pinned Carrington Uhlir of Battle Creek in 1:16 and Kayleigh Marksmeier of West Point-Beemer. In the fifth place match, Gubbels won by fall in 1:20 over Zulema Godinez from South Sioux City.

At 190, Kira Vavra lost both matches by fall, one to Madelyn Tryon from Southwest in 2:25 and another to Kennedy Karschner from Platteview in 0:16.

Finally Lauren Ueding (235) began her day with a loss by fall to Quinlyn Kennel of Norfolk Catholic in 0:33, and Ueding’s final match ended with another loss by fall to Alexis Anderson of Battle Creek in 0:44. 

Head girls wrestling coach Les Painter says, “The girls wrestled hard at the Battle at the Point.  Even the girls that had been battling sickness all week came and battled. The top 3 teams are all in the same districts in Fremont, so at least we know where we stand.  We have a lot of work to do, but we're happy with how we wrestled. This next coming week we will have our home meet where we have 19 girls teams and 14 boys teams. “ 

The girls team will be in a dual in O’Neill on Thursday, December 15. 


Pierce Girls Claim Two Wrestling Dual Wins

On Tuesday, December 6, the Pierce Bluejay girls kicked off their duals season at the second wrestling meet at Crofton-Bloomfield in a triangular with Crofton-Bloomfield and Bon Homme.

Pierce started the night in a dual with Bon Homme, South Dakota, winning 60-12.  

Les Painter comments on the meet by saying, “The girls wrestled well and the girls keep improving. It's also fun to watch our team cheer for each other at duals.” 

At 135, Peyton Hellmann from Bon Homme/Avon won by fall over Angeline Skrdla in 2:47. Haylee Miller (140), Lainey Jensen (145), Isabelle Kuehler (155), Katelynn Gubbels (170), Mariah Eckert (190), Lauren Ueding (235), Mia Sackville (105), Icis Sackville (110) and Hadleigh Collison (120), and Maggie Painter (130) won by forfeit. 

At 125 Isabelle Skrdla fell to Britney Rueb in 3:39. 

The second dual of the evening against Crofton-Bloomfield, Pierce also grabbed the win, 39-33.

In the dual against Crofton-Bloomfield, Rylie Arens won by fall over Lainey Jensen, who wrestled at 145 from Pierce. 

Next was Isabelle Kuehler (155) pinning Jaisie Janssen in 1:45.

At 190, Annabelle Poppe from Crofton-Bloomfield won by fall over Mariah Eckert in 1:53. Madisen Peterson from Crofton-Bloomfield won by fall in 2:31 over Isabelle Skrdla who wrestled at 125. Haylee Miller wrestled at 140 her place was unknown. Katelyn Gubbels wrestled at 170 and her place was also unknown. Lauren Ueding wrestled at 235 and her place was unknown. 

Mia Sackville (105), Icis Sackville (110), Hadleigh Collison (120), Maggie Painter (130), Angeline Skrdla (135), Haylee Miller (140), Katelyn Gubbels (170), and Lauren Ueding (235) all won by forfeit. 

The Lady Jays won this dual 54-24.

Maggie Painter says, “Of the girls that wrestled I thought they competed well, and despite some losses, they kept their heads up, which I think is an important aspect of this sport.”

The Lady Jay wrestlers will be back in action on Saturday, December 17, at their home meet.
