By Claudia Riggert
On December 1, the Pierce Lady Jays basketball team started off their season on their home court on a positive note with a 42-24 win against the Howells-Dodge Jaguars.
Starting off slow in the first quarter, the Jaguars were able to put up seven points while the Lady Jays only scored two.
Coming out strong in the second quarter, the Lady Jays ended the half leading 19-15.
Head coach Darren Sindelar states, “We started out a little slow in the first quarter. From the second quarter on, I think we settled in on the offensive and defensive side of the court and played a good game.”
Starting off strong in the third quarter, Pierce won the quarter 12-2 with the ending score of the quarter being 31-17 in favor of the Lady Jays.
To take home the first season game win, the Lady Jays added 11 points to the score while the Jaguars scored seven in the final quarter. This resulted in Pierce defeating the Jaguars 42-24.
“We did pretty good,” sophomore Hadley Wragge claims. “At first it was a little rough. Once we shook off the nerves, we started executing very well.”
Skylar Scholting led the team in scoring with 12 points. Close behind, Morgan Moeller and Wragge both contributed seven points throughout the night. Aubrey Hanson put up six points while Ava Knox scored five. Freshman Emily Endorf nailed a 3-pointer and Abigail Cone ended the game with two points.
Leading the team on defense was Moeller with four steals. Scholting pulled down 12 rebounds, followed by Moeller with eight, and A. Hansen with seven. Wragge and Cone each grabbed five rebounds, while Knox had three and Endorf grabbed two rebounds.
Sindelar comments on the night saying, “I was impressed with our effort and attitude. The girls controlled what they could control. Their shots did not fall early, but they didn’t get discouraged. Our shot selection was good. Later in the games, those same shots started to fall. I thought we played a good overall defensive game. I thought we did a great job on the offensive glass.”
The Lady Jays will be back in action on Friday, December 9, at Boone Central.
