Girls Golf has Two State Qualifiers
By Emma Risinger
On Tuesday, October 4, the girls golf team set out for Wayne for the last time this season to compete in the district competition, and the team took 4th place overall and had two players, senior Alena Peters and freshman Rylee Altwine, who will be attending state.
As said, the team placed 4th overall with a score of 404.
Head coach Melinda Stelling was very happy for her two medalists and state qualifiers. She said, “I'm excited for Alena and Rylee and their state-qualifying performance. They hung in there against some tough competition.” As for their scores, Peters played a 98 granting her 8th place, and Altwine shot a 100 allowing her to make the 10th place spot.
Peters showed pride in her own accomplishment, as well as Altwine’s when she said, “I feel great about making it to state, even though I am not exactly happy with my score. Also, I am very proud of Rylee for making it to state.”
While the rest of the team will not be going to state, they were all in the top half of all 61 attending golfers from 13 other attending schools: Wayne, O'Neill, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Battle Creek, West Holt, Cedar Catholic, Pender, Norfolk Catholic, Crofton, Stanton, Elkhorn Valley, Ainsworth, and Emerson Hubbard.
Senior Keli Shermer ended in 12th place after playing a 102, junior Ashley Wacker shot a 104 to receive 15th place, and last but not least was senior Zaylah Pfanstiel, who after playing a 111, finished the day in 23rd place.
But considering that the day of the state competition will be here soon, Pierce’s two qualifiers are in the midst of their preparations. Stelling reports that she says that she plans to take Peters and Altwine down to Columbus before the competition to get in a practice round. In an interview, Peters said that she has a lot of things she plans on working on before state. Specifically, she plans to put extra focus on chipping and putting.
The state competition will begin on Monday, October 10 and go through Tuesday, October 11. The tournament will be held at the Elks Country Club in Columbus.
