XC Takes on Yankton Meet

By Ella Gaes

Pierce High’s cross country team competed in the Yankton Meet on Friday, September 23. There were no team scores recorded.

Coach Gary Shada commented on the day, “The weather was perfect. We couldn’t have asked for better running conditions. It was a mixed bag of performances. Some runners ran exactly how I was hoping they would and others that still have to figure out how to run the race because they either start too slow and have too much left in the end or they either start too fast and don’t have anything left at all. So they are still testing the waters to figure out what they need to do.”

Individually for the varsity boys, Ashton Koch placed 11th with a time of 18:31.24. Elijah Streff came in 15th with a time of 19:03.76. Kyle Abler placed 19th with a time of 19:40.20. Nickolas Efta placed 24th with a time of 20:43.78. Carl Vogt came in 28th with a time of 21:40.48. Lastly for the Pierce boys, Alex Meier placed 30th with a time of 21:50.41.

Running in the varsity girls portion of the meet, sophomore Zoey Ebmeier placed 6th with a time of 21:18.79.

Individually placing for the 2000-meter run in the middle school boys division, Kendall Shada took home the gold with a time of 12:36.55. Next, Max Weber came in 9th with a time of 14:17.49. Crossing the finish line 23rd, Blaine Anson had a time of 15:38.99.

In the 2000-meter run in the middle school girls division, Haley Scholting came in second and took the silver home with a time of 14:03.19.

After talking to seniors Meier and Koch, Koch said, “We saw the best quality of competition which will help us prepare for upcoming meets. Meier said, “The Yankton meet is a unique experience because it is only South Dakota teams, and we only see them once a year.”

The next cross country meet is on Thursday, September 29, at Stanton located at the Elkhorn Acres Golf Club.
