New Addition to Greenhouse Benefits our School and Community

by Isabelle Skrdla

During the fall semester, the ag business class developed a business plan all semester that consisted of utilizing a hydroponics garden system. This method simply grows edible plants like herbs, veggies, and even some fruits without soil!

A benefit of adding this system to Pierce High’s greenhouse would be that students would be able to grow inside the greenhouse all year round. The students’ plan will benefit the school by being able to grow lettuce and other vegetables for school lunches that are provided to the students. Later on, the plan is to provide CSA (community supported agriculture) boxes to the community. These would consist of baskets filled with fruits and vegetables available for purchase.

The ag business class put together a slideshow presentation and presented it at an FFA chapter meeting held February. The Brandon Gerdes Memorial Foundation saw the benefits this could bring to our community and generously donated money for the start up of the project.

Currently, the hydroponics system is all assembled in the greenhouse and the ag classes are working hard to get it up in running.
