Freedom Walk in Gilman Park
by Maggie Painter
Randy Holmes, a Vietnam veteran, along with the local American Legion Post #72 and the City of Pierce, have put together a way for anyone to honor loved ones who have served in any branch of the military.
When asked what inspired the project Holmes said, “Dreams. It’s just something that came up, and I thought I needed to get done.” Furthermore, he wants to honor those who didn’t make it home.
Freedom Square will be located near the entrance of Gilman Park next to the cannon and to the upcoming Freedom Walk. Here people will find bricks inscribed with up to three names of veterans who have served in any branch of the US military and lived in Pierce County at some point in their lives.
At the moment, there are only 445 bricks accessible for purchase, available for $100 each.
