Top Three Finish for Pierce Girls

The Pierce girls wrestling team finished third at the Battle at the Point meet held at at West Point-Beemer on December 11. Finishing ahead of Pierce were Grand Island and West Point-Beemer.

Sophomore Maggie Painter, who wrestled at 132, finished in 1st for the Lady Jays, scoring 32 team points. She pinned all of her opponents who included Evelyn Venegas of Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons Decatur, Kimberly Vincente-Gonzalez of Fremont, Rahlonda Britt of Omaha Burke, Morgan Hensch of Conestoga, and finally Brooklin Kuester of West Point-Beemer.

Coach Tyler Legate commented that “Our more experienced girls are doing pretty well. There’s a few moves we have to work through. We just have to keep working.”

Wrestling at 100 was Icis Sackville, who fell to Sandra Gutierrez of Grand Island, Riley Hohn of Weeping Water, Braelyn Johnson of West Point-Beemer, and Day Paw of Madison.

At 107, Mia Sackville fell to Nattlie Hull of Scribner-Snyder, Jocelyn Prado of Johnson County Central and Morgan Brahmer of Fremont. However, M. Sackville was able to pin Apple Paw of Madison in her final match of the day.

Senior Callie Arnold finished 4th for the Lady Jays, winning by a 9-5 decision over Grace Darling of Wahoo, pinning both Hannah Jearue of Omaha Burke and Aniya Williams of Bellevue East, then falling to Alexis Pehrson of Yutan. In her 3rd place match, Arnold fell in the ultimate tie breaker to Corah Linnaus of Stanton.

Angeline Skrdla placed 5th for the Lady Jays, winning by a 13-5 major decision over Ashley Stadt of Scribner-Snyder in her first round. In her second round, she won in a 10-5 decision over Lluvia Fierro of Grand Island. She lost by fall to Jesse Hasenkamp of Wahoo and Karina Raney of Wahoo. But in her 5th place match round, she pinned Brooklynn Chaple of Bellevue East.

Finishing in 6th place was Isabelle Skrdla, who fell in her first two rounds to Adriana Cabello of Grand Island and Samantha Burch of Weeping Water. I. Skrdla came back to pin Taylor Miller of Weeping Water, but then fell to Sheccid Vallin of Fremont in the 5th place match. 

Katelyn Gubbels (152) finished 5th for the Lady Jays, falling in her first four rounds to Saige Miserez of West Point-Beemer, Rita Ceballos of Johnson County Central, Jayda Parker of Bellevue East and Anyia Roberts of Grand Island. In her final round, Gubbels pinned Bailey Kuehl of Arcadia. 

Pierce had two girls wrestle at 185, Mariah Eckert, who finished 2nd, and Kira Vavra who finished 7th. Eckert fell in her first round to Zeena Villanueva of BRLD, but pinned Hailey O’Brien of Fremont in round two. In round three she pinned Meghan Hixon of Grand Island, and during the championship bracket first round, Eckert pinned Ashlynn Rath of Battle Creek. However, in her final match of the day, Eckert fell to Eny Bravo-Torcios of Fremont. Also at 185, Vavra pinned Kaydence Coukart of Bellevue East, but lost by fall to Eny Bravo-Torcios of Fremont and Ashlynn Rath of Battle Creek. In the consolation bracket, Vavra lost by an 8-0 major decision to Hailey O’Brien of Fremont. During her final round of the day, Vavra again pinned Coukart.

Finally, at 235, senior Makinzie Parsons finished 2nd for the Lady Jays, pinning Kallie Brester of Fremont in :23 during her first round. She also pinned Raina Krebs of Summerland, Calissa Kester of Summerland, and Ali Edwards of Grand Island. During the first place match, Parsons fell to Claire Paasch of West Point-Beemer.

The Lady Jays will be at home for the Pierce Invitational on Saturday, December 18.
