Speech Team Competes at Boone CentralĀ

The Pierce High speech team competed at the Boone Central Speech Invitational on Saturday, January 25. The varsity team brought home the first place finish in the team sweepstakes category while the novice team placed fifth.

On the varsity team, the group consisting of Maiya Baumann, Halle Ross, Klarissa Norris, Caydan Retzlaff, and Alyssa Cederburg placed first in Oral Interpretation of Drama. Maiya Baumann placed first in Humorous Prose. Ross and Retzlaff placed first in Duet Acting. 

Emilia Goetsch placed second in Entertainment Speaking. In Informative Speaking, Norris placed second. 

Mark Venteicher placed third in Extemporaneous Speaking. Retzlaff placed fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking. 

In Humorous Prose, Norris placed fourth. Baumann and Venteicher placed fourth in Duet Acting. 

In Informative Speaking, Shelby White placed fifth. White also placed fifth in Persuasive Speaking. Goetsch, Tanner Kuper, and M. Venticher placed fifth in Oral Interpretation of Drama. Zach Price placed fifth in Humorous Prose. 

Abygail Streff placed sixth in Poetry. In Serious Prose, Halle Ross placed sixth. Hailey Abler placed sixth in Persuasive Speaking. Zach Price placed sixth in Entertainment Speaking.

On the novice team in Persuasive Speaking, Michaela McWilliams placed second, and Keli Shermer placed fourth. In Entertainment Speaking, Ciara Garcia placed second. In Extemporaneous Speaking, Brielle Unseld placed fourth. In Poetry, Madeline Altwine placed fifth. 

The Boone Central Speech Invitational presented The Ellen Kohtz Individual Sweepstakes Award to Baumann. The award is given to the individual who scores the most points total in all events.

Senior Norris commented, “This meet was a great way to start the season, as individuals and as a team I think we performed very well, and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the season takes us.”

The next competition for the speech team is the Hartington Newcastle/Cedar Catholic High School Invite and will be held Saturday, February 1.
