FCCLA Visits U.S. Capitol

Nebraska FCCLA made a visit to the U.S. Capitol. Nebraska FCCLA State President, Sydney Erickson attended the Family Career and Community Leaders of America Capitol Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. September 30-October 2. Sydney was able to attend the conference through a scholarship she received through the Nebraska Corn Board that supports the education and advocacy of Career and Technical Education.

At the conference Sydney received training that focused on networking, professionalism, and advocacy. She joined together with other youth leaders from across the nation in meeting with congressional leaders to promote the need to increase funding for Career and Technical Education and advocate for the importance of FCCLA and Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS). She had the opportunity to personally meet with staffers from Senator Deb Fischer’s, Senator Ben Sasse’s, and Representative Adrian Smith’s offices to seek support for FCCLA and Family and Consumer Sciences Education.

While attending the conference in Washington D.C. she toured the Capitol with a staffer from Senator Deb Fischer’s office, she also visited the National Holocaust Museum, the National Archives, and many memorials around Washington D.C.

“Capitol Leadership was such an amazing experience! We had great meetings with staffers of our members in congress and learned more about the importance of advocacy. I’m really excited take everything I learned from Capitol Leadership to continue advocating for Career and Technical Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, and FCCLA in Nebraska.”

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has over 175,000 members and more than 5,300 chapters from 50 state associations, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
