5 Reasons Why Setting is the Hardest Position in Volleyball

by Taylor Miller

Many things look easy and are very easy, but setting is not one of them. Setting might look like a piece of cake, but it is the hardest position in volleyball for many reasons. One reason is that as a setter, it is their job to get the second ball up to one of their hitters, even if the first pass was not any good. Also, while setting, they have to remember what kind of set each person hits better. For example, some people have a higher jump than others. So, considering this, the setter has to decide to either set higher, lower, farther out, or tighter to the net depending on how high or low that player jumps. Another thing to take into consideration is how fast or slow their hitters are. As a setter, they have to memorize which teammates hit faster so they can give them a faster and not loopy set. Another thing that makes setting one of the hardest positions in volleyball is watching who their currents hitters are. Some hitters hit better than others, so therefore the setter needs to make sure they are setting to the better hitters. And lastly, the setter also has to keep in mind when to setter dump or when to set to the hitters. As you can see there are many things setters have to do and the control they need to have in order to help their team win.
