Lacey Adams Speaks of Peace Corps Work
by Morgan Crist
Pierce alum Lacey Adams spoke to several groups of students at Pierce High about her work in the Peace Corps on Wednesday, August 17.
Lacey Adams visited Pierce High after spending time in Fiji as a teacher for the Peace Corps. She was invited to talk to PHS’s World History and American History classes, where she shared information about Fijian culture and language, as well as her specific duties and experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer. Lacey said her goal of speaking to the students was to share her experience of being in another country and helping out, as well as to share some pictures with them. Rick Adams, who is Lacey’s father and teacher of World and American History, said that he brought Lacey in as a guest because he wanted the class to expand their horizons and see what else is out there in the world.
Lacey joined the Peace Corps because it has been a goal of hers since college and tied into her desire to study abroad. She has experienced highs and lows during her volunteer work, such as the downside being that some people expect significant, visible change to happen right away with Peace Corps work, and that’s just not possible. However, she said the best part about volunteering in Fiji has been the people because they’re so caring, welcoming, and excited about her work.
Lacey is returning to Fiji and will continue to volunteer there with the Peace Corps following this visit to her home. Rick Adams expressed his pride in his daughter’s Peace Corps work, saying, “It’s awesome, and it’s brave because she is gone for long periods of time.”
The students who listened to Lacey’s presentation also gave their opinions, including eighth grader Alexus Sindelar, who said she thought the coolest part was “How she learned all 9 different languages they speak and how they go to different countries and help out.”
