Bluejay Wrestlers Fall to in Triangular

The Bluejay wrestling team traveled to Battle Creek on Thursday, January 19, to battle the Braves and Norfolk Catholic Knights in a triangular. The Bluejays were unable to compete with their Battle Creek opponent, losing 69-3 . The Bluejays also fell to Norfolk Catholic in a score of 62-18.

In their first dual of the night, the Jays gave up six matches to Battle Creek due to empty weight slots. In the eight matches that were wrestled, Brodey Peters lost to Preston Bussey by decision 3-10. Brett Tinker fell to Dakota Tegeler in a tech fall 7-23. Coltin Bauer went against Steven Frisch but lost by major decision 4-17. Dylan Kuehler lost to Austin Marx by fall. Jayden Sporleder wrestled Caydon McCrasken but lost by fall. Jeremiah Kruntorad lost to Owen Lade by a fall. Jordan Simms lost to Damien Kersten by fall. Cody Yawn wrestled Ty Heimes and lost by decision 3-1. In an exhibition match Jacob Kerber went against Wyatt Schmitt and fell by pin. Ryder Fuchs scored the team’s only points against Battle Creek in a 10-3 decision.

The Bluejays also lost to Norfolk Catholic 62-18. Four matches were given up due to empty weight slots. Zane Gleason fell to Dillon Hupp by fall. Coltin Bauer beat Brendan Bachman by fall. At 182, Norfolk Catholic had an open weight class, and Ryder Fuchs took 6 team points.  Dylan Kuehler fell to Ryan Webbert by fall. Jacob Kerber lost to Joey Otero by fall. Jayden Sporleder was defeated by Mason Bykerk by fall. Jeremiah Kruntorad loss to Wyatt Smydra in a tech fall 0-15. Jordan Simms fell to Will Abler by fall. Cody Yawn lost by decision 7-8 to Jonah Heng. Brodey Peters beat Justin Brtek by fall.

Coach Tyler Legate said, “The biggest struggle we had on the night was finishing matches in the third period.”  To prepare for their next meet Legate said, “In practice we will continue to get stronger in all three phases on the mat.”

The wrestlers’ next matches will be in the Boone Central tournament on Saturday, January 28.


Bluejays Wrestle in Aurora Duals

Pierce’s wrestling team faced some tough duals at the Aurora dual tournament on Saturday, January 21. Winning one dual, Pierce returned home placing 7th.

In the first round, Pierce wrestled against Millard North and lost 25-51 despite winning more matches. At 138, Brodey Peters won by an injury to Adam Anneberg. Brett Tinker at 145 defeated Antonio Rinn by major decision 17-4. With Pierce being open at 152, 160, and 170, they gave up eighteen points. At 182, Ryder Fuchs pinned Joseph Morgensen. At 195, Dylan Kuehler lost to Tristan Welborn by decision 5-10. Jacob Kerber, wrestling at 220, was pinned by Ian Macaulay. Pierce was open at 285 and gave up six points to Millard North. At 106, Jayden Sporleder was pinned by Nikhil Gadgil. Giving up six points to Millard North, Pierce was open at 113. At 120, Jeremiah Kruntorad defeated Andrew Kurtenbach in sudden victory. Jordan Sims was pinned by Koby Troia at 126. In the final match of round one, Cody Yawn pinned Connor Eastman.

Pierce wrestled against Norris in round two. They were defeated 23-59. Starting round two off, Brett Tinker wrestled at 145 and got pinned by Zachary Serna. Pierce was open again at 152, 160, and 170 and gave up eighteen points. Ryder Fuchs wrestled at 182 and pinned Dustin Weaver. At 195, Dylan Kuehler was pinned by Brodey Zabel. With Norris being open at 220, Jacob Kerber earned six points for the Jays. At 285, Pierce was open giving Norris six points. Jayden Sporleder was pinned by Caden Stutzman at 106. Pierce was open at 113 and gave Norris six more points. Weighing in at 120, Jeremiah Kruntorad was defeated by Clayton Williams by tech fall 3-19. At 126, Jordan Sims was pinned by Simon Johnson. Cody Yawn defeated Brandon Stolzer by tech fall 18-3 at 132. For the final match for round two, at 138, Brodey Peters pinned Tyler Nelson.

Wrestling in round three was Pierce versus Central City. They were defeated after tying 36-36 due to the tie breaker: Central City had more first points scored in each match, giving Central City the win. At 152, Bretty Tinker was pinned by Jared Gallion. Pierce was open at 160, 170, and 182 and gave up eighteen points to Central City. Weighing in at 195, Dylan Kuehler was pinned by Noah Carlson. With Central City open at 220, Jacob Kerber gained six points for the Jays. Central City was open at 106, giving Jayden Sporleder six points for the Jays. Central City was also open at 120 and 126, giving Jeremiah Kruntorad and Jordan Sims twelve points to add to the Jays’ team score. At 132, Cody Yawn pinned Eric Rieken. Weighing at 138, Zane Gleason was defeated by Luke Peterson by fall. In the final match of round three, Brodey Peters was pinned by Dyllan Lee.

In the final round, Pierce defeated Shelton/Kenesaw 47-35. Pierce was open at 160 and 170 and gave up twelve points to Shelton/Kenesaw. At 182, Ryder Fuchs defeated Daly Haller by fall. Shelton/Kenesaw was open at 195 and 220, which gave Dylan Kuehler and Jacob Kerber wins, gaining the Jays twelve points. At 285, Pierce was open and gave Shelton/Kenesaw six points. At 106, Jayden Sporleder was defeated by Sam Tourney by fall. Pierce was open at 113, giving the other team six points. Jeremiah Kruntorad was defeated by Michael Kautz by tech fall 15-0 at 120. Jordan Sims gained the Jays six points in the open weight class 126. At 132, Cody Yawn defeated Castor Ruyle by fall. Shelton/Kenesaw was open at 138, giving Zane Gleason the win for six points. Weighing in at 145, Brodey Peters defeated Leroy Garcia by tech fall 16-0. In the final match, Brett Tinker pinned Remington Wright at 152.

Pierce wrestles next at the Boone Central/Newman Grove Invitational on Saturday, January 28, in Albion.
