Koehlmoos is State Biology Teacher of the Year

Pierce High teacher Deb Koehlmoos was recently selected the Nebraska Biology Teacher of the Year.  The National Association of Biology Teachers presents this award to “outstanding biological/life science teachers” to recognize teaching excellence “essential to modern society and to human survival in the future.” Nominated by Principal Mark Brahmer, Koehlmoos also received five letters of recommendation and submitted an application including her credentials and service to science teaching and students.

Her qualifications include being a member of Nebraska Association of Science Teachers, serving on the Ne-SA Science Item Writing committee that wrote the state science test, attending and presenting at the state science teachers’ convention, and the Nebraska Educational Technology Association, being part of the Rural Academic Secondary School Science Partnership and the Math-Science Partnership Project.  Koehlmoos has led students to attend and several times win the Wonderful World of Water, and to institute a community recycling program.

Koehlmoos will attend the National Biology Teachers’ convention in Anaheim, California, in October, where she will be honored at a banquet and receive her award. In addition to the honor, she receives a new microscope.

Koehlmoos graduated from Midland Lutheran College with a BA degree and Doane College with a Masters degree in 2006.  She taught at Dodge Public Schools, and has taught and coached at Pierce since 1987. Along with biology at Pierce High, Koehlmoos teaches Physiology 1 and 2 and in the spring will be teaching the new class, Intro to Healthcare/Medical Terminology.

Koehlmoos was “surprised and honored because there are a lot of great teachers out there.”  She feels grateful to have had “the opportunity to work with great teachers and to be blessed with great students that make teaching fun.”  She added, “I thoroughly enjoy what I do and am thankful for this award.”

Brahmer said, “Mrs. Koehlmoos is very deserving of this award.  She has been a very dedicated and hardworking staff member at PHS for a number of years. Mrs. Koehlmoos definitely holds her students to a high standard as far as learning the information in biology and physiology.”

Koehlmoos’s family includes husband Dean, and children Eric, Austin, and Allison.
