The Pierce High speech team competed masterfully on Saturday, January 12. The Pierce team took first place trophies in both JV and varsity in their home invite. This is the first time this year that the speech team has finished first as a team. Judges in the events were provided by the schools that attended, including Pierce.
The varsity team was led by a wonderful performance by Andrew Halsey and Nick Lukens. This duo finished first in duet acting for the second meet in a row. Andrew also finished second in humorous prose and third in entertainment speaking.
Maggie Echternacht and Natasia Otto-Berglund followed Nick and Andrew, finishing third in duet acting. Echternacht finished third in impromptu speaking, and Otto-Berglund finished fourth in serious prose. Echternacht and Otto-Berglund also competed in the varsity oral interpretation of drama (OID) with Cassie Lueshen and Jonathan Canaday. The OID finished third. Canaday got third in humorous prose. Other varsity placers were Kyle Rohrich, fifth in extemporaneous speaking, and Faye Gerteisen, fifth in poetry.
The JV won with first place performances by both Vanessa Derr in impromptu speaking and Emily Taylor in humorous prose. Taylor also placed sixth in entertainment speaking with Kia Kai right behind her in seventh. Other placers in JV were Brittnie Abler and Cara Schultz, second in duet acting; Stefanie Koehler and Kaelee Stuchlik, fourth in duet acting; and Chelsea Atkins and Hannah Atkins, fifth in duet acting.
Stevie Buettgenbach, Jasmine Kai, Kara Polt, and Kathy Venteicher competed well together, placing second in OID. Venteicher placed second in impromptu speaking with Faye Gerteisen fourth. Kara Polt finished third in persuasive speaking, and Mikaela Ruppert finished second in poetry.
Pierce’s speech coach Crystal Bauermeister said, “As a team we had a lot of people step up and take on dual or even triple events, and that really helped out the team score.” The speech team has been competing very well this year and is only getting stronger. If anyone wants to follow the speech team more closely, the results from this meet along with West Point CC, conference, and districts will be posted on www.espeech.net.
