Lady Jays Softball Goes Down Swinging at Highway 91

The Lady Jay softball team went to Highway 91 on Tuesday, August 21, and lost 7-8.
In the first inning, Highway 91 scored one run and held the Lady Jays to zero. Highway 91 scored another run in the second and once again held the Lady Jays to go up by two.
The third inning rolled around, and the Lady Jays mounted a comeback, scoring three runs and holding Highway 91 to one to tie the game. The Lady Jays scored no runs in the fourth inning and allowed Highway 91 scored two, putting the score at 3-5. In the fifth inning, Highway 91 extended their lead with two more runs and held the Lady Jays off from scoring.
During the sixth inning, the Lady Jays tried to close the gap as they scored three runs and held Highway 91 one, thus making the score 6-8. In the final inning, Pierce managed just one run before Highway 91 got three outs to take the win.
For individual stats, Kiley Bierman had one hit, six putouts, and two assists. Rose Graham had two hits, three assists, and two putouts. Lizzie Hammer had two putouts, one RBI, and two hits. Brianna Aguilera had two hits, two RBIs, one homerun, and three assists. Angelica Volquardsen had one hit, a double. Kaycie Druyor had a hit, one RBI, one assist, and one putout. Kaylee Dvorak had a triple, one RBI, and one assist. She also threw five strikeouts from the mound. Ashton Oestreich had seven putouts.
Coach Marika VonSeggern said, “I think everything is starting to come together offensively, and we've been improving defensively. We need to get after it and start each game out on top instead of allowing them to dig us a hole.”
The Lady Jay softball team will play again on Thursday, August 30, at O’Neill.
