Lady Jays Swing Away at Wayne

The Lady Jays’ softball team had a tournament on Saturday, August 18, in Wayne where they went 0-3 against Twin River, Ponca, and Highway 91.

The Lady Jays had some hard fought losses. The first game against the Twin River Titans ended with a  score 0-10. In the first inning, Twin River scored one run while holding the Lady Jays to zero runs. During inning two, the Titans add three more runs to the score while still holding the Lady Jays to zero. In the third inning, the Titans racked up five more points while still holding the Lady Jays to zero runs. In the final inning, Twin River sealed their win with one ore run, leaving the final score at 0-10.

Against the Titans, Mikala Stone had one hit in the game. Brianna Aguilara had four putouts, and Kaylee Dvorak had three total strikeouts from the mound. Rose Graham, Kaylee Dvorak, Brianna Aguilera, and Ashton Oestreich all had one assist.

The second game of the day, the Lady Jays played Ponca and lost 3-14. In the first inning, both teams came on strong with Pierce scoring three runs and Ponca scoring five. The second inning was quiet for both teams’ offenses, with neither of the teams scoring to leave the score at 3-5 with Ponca in the lead going into the third. In the third inning, the Indians began to pull away, racking up four runs while holding the Lady Jays to zero. In the fourth inning, Ponca held the lead, scoring three more runs. The Lady Jays once again couldn’t get things going on offense, leaving the score at 3-12 going into the fifth and final inning. In the fifth, Ponca pulled away further, adding two more runs to their score and once again holding the Lady Jays to none to leave the final score at 3-14.

Against Ponca, Kiley Bierman had a double. Graham, Lizzie Hammar, Aguilara, Angelica Volquardsen, Kaycie Druyor, and Dvorak all had hits. Stone had six putouts. Dvorak led the team in assists with six and also threw two strikeouts.

In their third game, the Lady Jays played Highway 91. After an exciting, close game, the Lady Jays fell 9-12. In the first inning Pierce came out swinging, scoring two runs and holding the Gold Coins to zero. In the second inning, Highway 91 outscored the Lady Jays three to zero to take over the lead. In the third, Highway 91 got on a roll and scored nine runs while Pierce scored three, putting the score at 5-12. In the fourth inning, neither team scored, but in the fifth, Pierce mounted a comeback by holding Highway 91 to zero points and managing four more runs. Despite their efforts, the Lady Jays fell 9-12.

In the Lady Jays’ final game of the tournament, Elizabeth Hammer had two doubles. Stone had four putouts. Aguilera had four assists, and Bierman had two RBI’s.

Coach Marika VonSeggeren said, "We played three games this weekend and improved in each one. We continued to struggle fielding and made quite a few errors. This week, our main focus will be eliminating the fielding errors and disciplining ourselves in the batter's box. Hopefully the girls are ready to work and get back after it."

The Lady Jays’ next games will be Saturday, August 25, in the Wisner Tournament.
