Volleyball Serves up First Competition of Season

by Montana Ruppert

The varsity volleyball team played a jamboree game at home on Thursday, August 16, against the Columbus Discoverers. The Lady Jays lost four sets to the Discoverers.

In the first set, the Lady Jays fell 17-25. The Lady Jays were neck-and-neck with the Discoverers until, leading 17-20, Columbus rallied and hammered away five straight points to win the first set.

In the second set, the Lady Jays took Columbus into extra points but ultimately fell 25-27. Kennedy Warneke went on a four-point serving run in the set.

The third set ended with a score of 19-25. Maggie Brahmer went on a six-point serving run, but the Lady Jays couldn’t build enough momentum to take the lead.

In the final set, the Lady Jays fell in a tight set 23-25.

Despite the losses, coach Brittany Weber said, “We did a lot of things very well. Though we found ourselves behind big in several sets, through strong leadership and a steady attack, we were able to fight back.”

Weber saw many positives in the game, indicating some of the Lady Jays’ strengths. She said, “We knew we had a strong front row attack as well as the versatility to attack from the back row. Unfortunately, we found ourselves out of system too often and weren't able to run our actions up front as often as we need to win against good teams.”

Looking ahead to the team’s first official game, Weber has a positive outlook, saying,
“We have two weeks of practice before our first game of the season, and we plan on building a strong fundamental base in all aspects of the game including defensive positioning, passing, setting, and attacking. I think we have a lot of potential with this group. We need to focus on the little things that separate good teams from great teams.”

The Lady Jays will be playing Norfolk Catholic at home on Thursday, August 30.
