Lady Jays Softball Team Back in Full Swing
by Angelica Volquardsen
The Pierce Lady Jays’ softball team--including their four student managers, 13 players, and coaches Marika VonSeggern and Adam Patrick--officially began their season with practice on Monday, August 6.
Of the 13 players, eight are returning letter winners, including Brianna Aguilera, Kaylee Dvorak, Rose Graham, Kiley Bierman, Magdalena Dale, Kaycie Druyor, Elizabeth Hammer, and Ashton Oestreich. The team’s main goal this year is to have a winning season.
As the Lady Jays have been preparing for their upcoming season by practicing and hitting the weight room, as well as participating in a summer team camp, they have also had the chance to meet their new coach, Marika VonSeggern, which helped the girls build from their past playing experience.
VonSeggern said, “This is my first year coaching, so I’m not sure who the tougher teams in our conference and district are. I know Wayne is now in our class, so that will be tough come districts. Also, Twin River and West Point Cedar Catholic are usually pretty tough as well. Our biggest strength is our returning players. They have improved from the first practice already and are so willing to help the younger girls develop their positions. We have depth in a lot of our positions and can move players around as needed, which is huge when having such a small team.”
The Lady Jays’ first game is on Thursday, August 16, against Wisner at the Pender fields at 5 p.m. Their next game will be held on Saturday, August 18, at the Wayne fields beginning at 9:30 a.m.
