Meier Selected as Poetry of Place Winner

Pierce High freshman Abigail Meier was honored as a winner of the Nebraska Writing Project’s Poetry of Place contest on Friday, May 4, at the State Capitol.

Meier’s poem, “On the County Line,” was written for Mrs. Melissa Legate’s English 9 course, during which students studied and wrote place-based poetry. The poem was then submitted to a reading committee that included state poet Twyla Hansen, renowned Nebraska slam poet Matt Mason, and members of the Nebraska Writing Project. Poems were submitted by students in grades 4-12 around Nebraska, and ten were ultimately selected as winners in various age divisions. Meier’s poem was in the 9-12 division and was one of five winning poems.
