Eighth Graders Attend Career Day at Northeast

by Kaleb Zamora

All of the 8th graders from Pierce High School, along with the school counseling department, went to an 8th career day at Northeast Community College on Tuesday, January 16.

Eighth graders from Northeast Nebraska attend this career day at Northeast Community College at different times throughout the school year to explore career options and learn other things about the world of work for their futures. The day started off with the 8th graders getting their results from the Copes, Caps, and Cops career tests, which they had done at Pierce High School in December. Then they used those results to research the careers they were interested in at the computer labs at the Lifelong Learning Center at Northeast.

After that, they did a realistic budgeting activity in which each 8th grader was given an annual income based on an actual career. With this information, they learned how to manage money and stay within their income. Lastly, the students went on a tour of Northeast Community College. They saw the college Welcome Center, Cox Activity Center, the new cafeteria and  dorms where students live.

School counselor Mrs. Mary Birch attended and helped the students at this event at Northeast. She said, “It’s a great day because it really helps them think about how careers will affect their lifestyle and how much money it takes to make a living. They also found out careers they might be good at, and they get to see a slice of the college life and see what college is about.”
