Varsity Volleyball Ends Season in Subdistricts

The varsity volleyball team competed in the district tournament on Monday and Tuesday, October 30 and 31, at Norfolk High School. Sweeping Norfolk Catholic for the first game of districts, the Lady Jays then fell to the Wayne Blue Devils in the subdistrict final the next night.

For their first game in subdistricts, the Lady Jays faced the Norfolk Catholic Knights. In three strong sets, the Lady Jays swept them with set scores of 25-19, 25-21, 25-22.

In the first set of the game, the Lady Jays and the Knights battled back and forth until Maggie Brahmer and Brenna Collison aided the Lady Jays with serving runs. Finishing the set strong, Pierce won 25-19. Barley letting up the next set, the Lady Jays defeated the Knights 25-21. Sidney Zimmerer and Kayla Simmons went on long serving runs this set to get the Lady Jays the lead they needed to finish the set ahead of the Knights. In the final set of play, the Lady Jays kept their momentum from the sets prior. Brahmer and Zimmerer went on long serving runs to get their team the lead they need to finish the game strong. The final set score was 25-22 with the Lady Jays coming out on top.

Individually for the Lady Jays, Brahmer led the team in kills with 13, and Meredith Fasse was right behind her at eight. Zimmerer had four service aces, and Brahmer and Rhayna Waldner had two blocks each. Zimmerer had 18 digs, and Collison 13. Grace Spieker had 16 assists, while Kayla Simmons had 13.

For their next game in sub districts, the Lady Jays faced the Wayne Blue Devils. In the first set of the game, the Lady Jays fell into an early deficit of 1-15. Not being ready to give up, Brenna Collison and Maggie Brahmer to help their team catch up to the Blue Devils, but starting off slow caused the Lady Jays to drop set one 15-25. The Lady Jays came back in the next set with the help of Simmons and Collison going on serving runs. Although they fought back this set, the Lady Jays were not able to pull off a set win, losing 19-25. In the third set of the game, the Lady Jays built some momentum but were still not able to come back. Simmons and Spieker went on serving runs this set to aid their team. Unfortunately for Pierce, they dropped the set 20-25.

Individually, Brahmer led the team in kills with seven, and Kroupa and Collison each had five. Zimmerer had two service aces, and Katrina Meier had eight blocks. Zimmerer had 39 digs while Collison had 26, and Simmons had 10 assists.  

Coach Brittany Weber said, “There were a lot of great moments this season. I am going to miss all of the seniors, and I am grateful for everything they have done for our program.”

The subdistrict game against Wayne was the final game of the Lady Jays’ 2017 season. They finished with an overall record of 18-14.
