Norris Makes All-State Band

by Rhayna Waldner

All-State band auditions were held on Friday, September 29. Many band students from Pierce High tried out, but only one was accepted, sophomore flute player Klarissa Norris.

All-State Band is an honor band that includes schools from around the state in all class sizes and is held in conjunction with the Nebraska Music Educators Association annual convention. It is held in the music building at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and the final performance is at the Lied Center. This event will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 16-18 with the final performance the evening of the 18th.

Norris started preparing to audition back in July. For her audition, she had to play two etudes, two scales, and an excerpt from a piece of music. To get accepted, students do a one-try audition with prepared music. Around 140 are accepted with over 850 auditioning. The All-State band members will work with an internationally known conductor as an ensemble and put on a performance after two and a half hours of rehearsal. They also have the opportunity to listen to top-notch music ensembles during the convention.

“I’m excited to go down there and be able to be with the best in the state,” Norris said.
Band director Mike Sindt said of Klarissa’s acceptance, "We are all proud to have such a high achieving musician here at Pierce High School. She will represent our school well at this event."
