FCCLA Attends Legislative Workshop at Capitol

FCCLA Attends Legislative Workshop at Capitol
by London Sindelar

FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) members London Sindelar, Alissa Hoffmann, Caleb Lohrberg and Emily Bjorklund, accompanied by their advisor Cheryl Timm, attended the Nebraska Association of Family Consumer Sciences 2014 Legislative Workshop at the Capitol Building in Lincoln on Monday, February 3.
The day started out early, as the members left at 5 a.m. for their long drive to Lincoln. After a light breakfast held in the Capitol cafeteria, the members were welcomed to the Capitol during their orientation. The students were able to meet with Senator Kate Sullivan, Colby Coash, and Kate Bolz, and also, a lobbyist, Jessica Kolterman. Each talked to the students about their job, some different things happening in the Capitol, and why they chose to run for senator.
Next, the members were able to take a tour of the Capitol and were able to listen in and watch a filibuster happening in the Legislative Chamber. Member Alissa Hoffmann said, “It was very entertaining watching two of the senators arguing back and forth. It was a classic case of filibustering, basically what all students try to do to their teachers during class.”
The members and advisors were next able to attend a luncheon in the Governor’s Mansion. At each table, the students and advisors were able to sit with a senator and talk with him or her about their job and what they are working on.
After the luncheon, the members were allowed to attend legislative hearings. The Pierce members attended to hearings: one on general affairs in which they were discussing laws involving alcohol, and the other on education in which they were talking about expanding learning opportunities.
After a long and informative day, the members headed back to Pierce, arriving home at about 6 p.m.
Advisor Cheryl Timm stated, “It was quite an interesting day. We experienced the legislature in action from listening to floor debate, to having a luncheon with our Senator Kate Sullivan, to attending legislative hearings. It was a great experience for all.”
