Third is the Word for Speech Club
Pierce High’s JV and varsity speech teams both took home third place from the Battle Creek speech meet on Friday, February 17.
In varsity, Katie Lockee received second place in serious prose and fourth place in extemporaneous speaking. Zach Halsey placed fourth in his humorous prose interpretation. In duet acting, Caleb Lohrberg and Alisha White placed fifth while Jacob Jones and Micah Bahnfleth placed fourth.
In JV, London Sindelar, MaKayla Douglass, and Tristen Sell, placed first, third, and sixth respectively in serious prose interpretation. Kristen Arens placed second in extemporaneous speaking, and her oral interpretation of drama with Tristen Sell, London Sindelar, Paige Spieker, and Shannah Unseld placed third. In duet acting Laurel Bailey and Rachel Tweedy placed third, and Shane White and Laurie Venteicher placed sixth. Venteicher felt that “the competition was tough”.
Mardi Gras Madness is the yearly theme of the Battle Creek meet. This year a photo booth was set up, and many competitors took a quick second between rounds to make a funny face with their friends. With fun comes work. After a long day of lugging tables from one end of one building to another end of another building, speech members had had an exhausting day. Competition was rough, and schedules were jammed. With little to no time to stop for lunch, members who were triple-entered were tired. At this meet Pierce competed against many teams they hadn’t competed against before. Finals were posted late in the day, and many members had taken lengthy naps before called to the third and final round. Once final round was over and all competitors were waiting for awards, that’s when Battle Creek broke out the music. Many danced; some watched. As an annual event, the mystery man came out and danced to “Thriller” with his official sparkly white glove and Michael Jackson outfit.
Coach Kristine Muir said, “It was a challenging meet for us. I think it will push us to work harder as a team.”
