Student of the Week-Alyssa Blair
Pierce High School is re-instituting its student of the week recognitions, and senior Alyssa Blair was selected as the first “Student of the Week.” She was recognized with a picture and her name placed in a new display case in the high school commons.
The high school’s guidance counselor, Mary Birch, nominated Blair for this award. Mrs. Birch said that Blair, a peer tutor all through high school, has been especially helpful to other students. Blair has also had behind-the-scenes achievements that never receive recognition, such as becoming a certified scuba diver.
Blair recently won third place in the county and first place at Pierce High School for her essay on “What County Government Day Means to Me.” She wrote it after attending County Government Day with other students from Mrs. Fleecs’s government class.
Student of the Week, initiated by Principal Mark Brahmer, is a way to recognize students who have shown excellence. Any student in grades 7–12 may be nominated. The nominations must come from high school staff members and be submitted to Mr. Brahmer.
There are no strict criteria for nomination. A student may be recognized for a single event, such as receiving a high grade on a test or earning a large scholarship. Or, students may show excellent performance consistently over time.
Expressing her reasons for nominating Blair, Mrs. Birch said, “Alyssa has a lot going for her. I would like to see her honored for it. She is very appreciative and hardworking.”
Mrs. Fleecs said, “Alyssa did so well with her essay because she is a very good writer. She expressed her personal feelings in her essay.”
