Band Students Participate in Conference

By Addison Sporleder

Many Pierce High band students spent their Monday at Norfolk Catholic High School for the Mid-State conference band clinic on March 6. The band members left Pierce at 8:00, where they then arrived in Norfolk along with many schools around the area.

Senior Kaley Johnson commented, “It was an enjoyable experience; however, I enjoyed last year's trip better. Overall, it's nice that a variety of bands are welcomed to form one.”

Throughout the day, students had sessions where they reviewed music to prepare for later that night. During those sessions, the students studied rhythms and music pieces to put together a band as one. Lunch was also served for the participants, which included Valentino's pizza and breadsticks.

Toward the end of the clinic, the students held a concert and performed the songs they practiced that day. The 9th and 10th graders performed together, while the 11th and 12th graders played multiple songs as well. The concert was welcomed for all to come watch. Once the concert was over, the Pierce band students returned home around 6:00.

Pierce High band director Mr. Mike Sindt commented, “The early rehearsals can be somewhat challenging since even though all of the students have learned how to play their instruments, the level of individual technique and style varied from student to student. However, as the day progressed the guest clinicians were able to get the band members to get used to each other to make the best possible performance. My favorite part of the day was the concert because it showed off the culmination of a collaborative effort by the students of nine different schools.”

The band will be performing at Pierce High on Tuesday, March 14, for their next concert.
