Bluejays Clean Out Blue Devils

By Autumn Lambrecht

On September 23, the Pierce Bluejays went to head to head with the Wayne Blue Devils on a game held at Wayne State College’s Memorial Field, and the Bluejays completely swept out the Blue Devils, 58-6.

Starting off the first quarter strong, the Pierce Bluejays came out and scored a touchdown right off the bat, but missed the PAT. The Bluejays scored again with a failed 2-point conversion, but still led 12-0. The Blue Devils got one play on the Bluejays and scored their first and only touchdown of the night, also missing the kick. Again, the Bluejays scored another touchdown with a 2-point conversion, ending the first quarter 20-6, with Bluejays maintaining the lead.

Taking on the second quarter, the Pierce Bluejays not only had a strong offense but also a solid defense all throughout. The Bluejays scored four touchdowns, along with two good kicks, bringing them up to 46-6, not allowing the Blue Devils to score any additional points.

Coming back from half with a running clock due to the 35-point rule, the Bluejays added another touchdown with the kick being no good, but bringing the score up to 52-6. For the fourth quarter, the game continued to slow down for scoring, but the Bluejays put down another touchdown, ending the game 58-6, ending with another win for the Pierce Bluejays, pushing their record to 5-0.

Senior Jacksen Wachholtz comments, “I thought we did a very good job of handling adversity after their touchdown in the first quarter and our chaotic series in the second quarter, and I think we will focus on cutting down on the pre snap penalties and blocking two steps past the whistle.”
For stats of the night, Keenan Valverde, Karter Wolfe, and Wachholtz each scored one touchdown, followed by Benjamin Brahmer and Addison Croghan each scoring two touchdowns.

Scholting grabbed the lone interception from the Blue Devils, running the ball back 55-yards for a Bluejay touchdown.

Jayden Coulter and Kaiden Fritz both registered sacks. Tristan Kuehler led the team in total tackles with 11. Also registering a number of tackles for the Jays were Fritz with 10 and Croghan with six.

Head coach Mark Brahmer added, “We were pleased with our boys’ effort and overall performance against Wayne. Moving forward, we have to prepare very well as we head down the stretch of the season. O’Neill will be a challenge as they have one of the most athletic quarterbacks in the state, and their receivers are quite skilled and athletic as well. It’ll be a challenge.”

The next football game for the Pierce Bluejays will be September 30, against the O’Neill Eagles at Pierce High School.
