Lady Jays Golf Swings for Third at Wayne

On Thursday, September 22, the Pierce girls golf team packed their clubs and then headed out to the Wayne High Invite held at the Wayne Country Club where the team took third place overall with a 398.
Melinda Stelling, head coach, said, “Even though some of the girls were disappointed with their scores, a couple of them had personal bests, so I was still pleased with the overall results. We will continue to work to improve for conference and districts.”
Pierce’s top medalist of the day was senior Alena Peters who played a 94 and placed seventh overall. Next, freshman Riley Altwine placed 14th and ended with 99. Senior, Keli Shermer shot a total of 101 and placed 19th. Zaylah Pfanstiel shot a total of 104 and placed 25th and states, “Overall we did really well and worked hard throughout the meet, and I’m very happy with out outcome.”
Aside from Pierce and Wayne, Columbus Scotus, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, O’Neill, Archbishop Bergan, Boone Central, Battle Creek, Columbus Lakeview, Cedar Catholic, Norfolk, South Sioux City, Norfolk Catholic, and Schuyler were all in attendance.
On Tuesday, September 27, the golf team will travel to Elkhorn Valley starting at 4:00.
Girls Golf Takes Second at Hartington Invitational

On Monday, September 19, the Pierce High girls golf team set out for Hartington to participate in an invitational against Cedar Catholic, Wayne, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Norfolk Catholic, Crofton, and Tri-County Northeast, and the Pierce team placed second overall with a 397.
As for individuals, every one of Pierce’s attending golfers placed. This is the first varsity meet where every golfer medaled, making this a special day for the team. First was senior Keli Shermer who played a 92 and placed 3rd. Shermer has a positive outlook on the rest of the season. In an interview, she said, “I think the team is doing well, and I'm doing pretty well, and it should be a good rest of the season.”
Following Shermer was senior Alena Peters who placed 6th and shot a 99. Next were freshman Rylee Altwine and senior Zaylah Pfansteil who played a 102 and a 104, and placed 10th and 11th respectively. Finally, there was junior Ashley Wacker rounded out the day with a 107 and 12th place.
Head coach Melinda Stelling also has confidence in the team going into the rest of the season. She said, “Having all five girls medal and getting 2nd as a team is a big confidence builder going into conference and districts.”
Another development in this year’s golf season is the upcoming Mid-State Conference tournament. To see the Lady Jay golfers tackle this more high stakes competition, be at Crofton golf course at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 29.
